Medical Laboratory Technician (S)

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence.

Assisting with competency program coordination for contract laboratories.

• Supporting testing areas such as microscopy (wet mounts, urine sediments, GC stat male smears), syphilis serology, GC cultures, and urine colony counts.
• Managing quality control assessments sent to local health departments to meet CLIA requirements.
• Overseeing quality control of gonorrhea selective media and working closely with HIV/STD Prevention and Care Branch staff.
• Maintaining and preserving microbiological control cultures (including ATCC organisms), ensuring proper storage, characterization, and inventory.
• Assisting with laboratory improvement workshops (wet mount, GC, and other technical trainings).
• Supporting continuing education and monthly Quality Council activities.
• Collaborating with regional consultants and laboratory improvement staff.

The position requires strong knowledge of clinical laboratory best practices, microbiology principles, quality control procedures, and CLIA/state/federal laboratory regulations. Overall, this role centers on laboratory quality assurance, microbiological culture management, regulatory compliance, and training support for public health laboratory staff.

Knowledge of principals of good clinical laboratory practices

• Working knowledge of principles of CLIA federal regulations: state and federal laws governing laboratories
• Working knowledge of microbiology, chemistry, serology/immunology
• Experience using statistical methods and data interpretation
• Skill in using laboratory equipment
