Systems & Process Engineering

We require a bachelors degree in engineering or a closely related field.
We need at least 10 years of systems engineering experience on integrated projects, preferably in scientific research and development settings.
We look for strong command of core systems engineering practices, including requirements capture, verification and validation planning, full lifecycle planning, and running effective meetings with distributed teams.
We require experience spanning the full lifecycle from design through operations.
We need experience working with international teams.
We expect exposure to electromagnetic, RF, digital signal processing, mechanical, software engineering, and civil engineering domains.

We oversee and contribute to the application of systems engineering processes across the lifecycle of multiple projects within the ALMA Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade program.
We develop and support integration, verification, and validation plans, interface control documents, and related materials.
We prepare and conduct system reviews, assist with subsystem design reviews, and serve on the project controls team.
We guide systems engineering management processes, including configuration management, baselining, change control, and document management, while coordinating these activities with our international partners.
We participate in system integration and testing activities.
Associated Universities, Inc. operates the Observatory under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation, and our work brings together advanced technology and scientific collaboration across state-of-the-art radio telescope facilities used by the international scientific community. The North American ALMA Support Center at our headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia is helping ALMA partners upgrade the radio telescope in the Chilean Andes, and this Systems Engineer role is a 3-year term position with a potential extension. The position is based at our NRAO headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia, with about 10% international travel and work typically performed in an office or laboratory setting. We offer a starting salary of $114,019 to $138,024, along with a comprehensive benefits package that begins on the first day of employment for eligible employees, including 13 holidays, up to 24 vacation days annually, medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement contribution equal to 10 percent of base pay with no required employee contribution.
