Hospital Care Registered Nurse (RN) - Surgery

Position Overview

Utilizes the nursing process to provide safe, effective, patient-centered care as a Registered Nurse (RN). Maintains professional accountability for assigned patients, evaluates the effectiveness of care provided by other direct caregivers, and coordinates patient care collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams. Upholds patient rights, maintains confidentiality, and performs all duties in alignment with Mercy’s mission, values, and Service Standards.

Unit Details

The Medical Surgical unit, also known as Med‑Surg, is a 48‑bed unit that manages acute medical‑surgical patients with a wide range of diagnoses and care needs. Patients may be preparing for or recovering from medical and surgical interventions, including pneumonia, sepsis, and pre/post‑op pain and wound care. Chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, and chronic kidney disease are also managed. Service lines include oncology, nephrology, urology, gastroenterology, and many more. Acuity of patients varies.

Ratio : 6:1

Qualifications

Education: Graduated from a school of nursing (associate’s degree, Diploma, or BSN).

Licensure: Must obtain and maintain a current RN license within the hiring state or compact licensure and meet all state board of nursing requirements.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or completion of the course within 30 days of hire. Additional unit‑specific certifications may be required, including but not limited to:

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)

TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

CPHON (Certified Pediatric/Hematology/Oncology Nurses)

OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse)

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

PEARS (Pediatric Assessment Recognition and Stabilization)

S.T.A.B.L.E. (Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, And Emotional Support) Six Assessment & Care Modules

C‑EFM (Fetal Monitor Certification)

Other unit‑specific certifications as required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to push, pull, or lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.

Prolonged standing and walking during each shift.

Ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.
