Psychology Interns

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the application.
Qualifications & Basic Requirements United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
English language proficiency - must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA policy
Education: One of the following:

• Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed; the specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment.
• Have a doctoral degree in psychology and successfully complete a re‑specialization program (including completion of an approved internship) in an APA or CPA accredited program; the retrained specialty must be consistent with the assignment; provide transcript or certificate.
• Have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature.

Internship: Must have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program accredited by APA or CPA at the time of completion and consistent with the assignment; or a VHA‑approved internship; or be board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a relevant specialty.
Licensure: Hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia; may qualify under the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees.
Grade determinations: Reference to GS‑11 and GS‑12 grade levels, including experience, assignment and demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities. (Summary of required experience, KSAs and assignment responsibilities for each grade.)
Duties Provide Vet Center services to eligible veterans, active duty service members and families dealing with military‑related psychological and psychosocial problems.
Implement psychotherapeutic modalities with individuals, families and groups to enhance readjustment.
Design and implement treatment strategies—counseling planning, goal setting, individualized readjustment counseling service plans, outcome measurements.
Deliver direct counseling services—including individual, group, couples or family counseling, in‑person or virtual as preferred by the client.
Conduct risk assessment and crisis intervention during initial and subsequent assessments.
Coordinate care by linking veterans with community resources, services and opportunities to maximize independence, health and well‑being.
Maintain outreach coordination with Vet Center outreach specialists to facilitate referrals.
Participate in staff meetings for team building, case discussion, coaching new staff and addressing staff self‑care.
Document all clinical interactions, care coordination episodes and relevant administrative responsibilities.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Vet Center Director.
Work schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary with regular salary increases; higher step rate may be awarded for unique qualifications.
Paid time off: 37-50 days annually (13-26 days of paid leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave based on prior work or military experience.
Parental leave: up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption or foster placement.
Child‑care subsidy: after 60 days of employment, eligible full‑time employees with a family income below $144,000 may receive a subsidy up to 25% of eligible childcare costs (monthly max $416.66).
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% contribution by VA Insurance.
Health benefits: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care and other insurance plans available.
Telework: Not a telework position.
