Summary
All police officers employed by the city of Port Aransas are responsible for performing general duty police work in protecting life and property and enforcing laws and ordinances.
Police officers maintain law and order, prevent crimes, and protect life and property within the city. Work methods are developed through best practices and monitored by supervising officers. Incumbents must be able to exercise sound and independent judgment in emergency and non-emergency situations. All assignments involve responsibility for recognizing the social importance of police functions, for tactful and courteous treatment of the public, and conscientious and efficient performance of duties without direct supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operates in conformance with federal, state, and local laws; and department and city policies and procedures
Patrols the entire city or a specific beat or district, on foot, or in a department vehicle
Checks doors and windows of business establishments, and investigates suspicious conditions.
Creates and maintains records for investigations and prepares detailed offense and case reports
Makes arrests, issues citations, and/or provides public education through verbal or written warnings, for violations of laws or ordinances
Receives, searches, fingerprints, photographs, completes booking reports, convinces, and monitors prisoners in the Port Aransas holding facility.
Enforces traffic regulations, directs traffic, investigates, and makes reports of traffic accidents.
Testifies in court and provides courtroom security for the Port Aransas Municipal Court.
Provides non-law enforcement public service activities, assists the public, searches for missing persons, gives information concerning the location of streets, routes, and buildings, provides public education on local laws, participates in community outreach programs, and provides other community service related activities as assigned

Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Any of the following conditions will result in being disqualified for this position: Any prior felony, Class A misdemeanor, or family violence convictions, including deferred adjudication. Any Class B misdemeanor convictions and/or deferred adjudication, during the preceding ten years of appointment. Any pending or non-adjudicated arrest for any criminal offense (felony or misdemeanor). Prior discharge from any law enforcement agency for untruthfulness. Dishonorable discharge from the military.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Some college coursework or prior law enforcement and/or military experience is preferred.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
To perform the job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet software and word processing software. Ability to operate, input, and retrieve data from department records management systems, e-mail systems, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid Texas Driver License in good standing.
Texas Peace Officer’s license issued by TCOLE.

Officers must have the ability to hear muffled conversations and whispers, speak the English language with clarity, proper enunciation, and context, using normal, elevated (yell), and subdued (whisper) voices. Employees must be able to smell and discern pleasant and noxious odors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but is frequently loud and intense. The job will require the employee to regularly talk or hear and frequently required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.
