Job Description and Performance Standards

Title: Physical Therapist Assistant

Rehabilitation Care - Inpatient/Acute Care

Reports To: Physical Therapy Supervisor

Under the direction of a registered Physical Therapist, utilizes Physical Therapy skills to assist in treatment of all referred patients of all age populations, and is responsible for completion of all necessary documentation. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principals of growth and development and assess data reflective of the patient's current status in relation to their age specific needs.

Graduate of an accredited program for Physical Therapy Assistant.

Registered PTA, or eligible for license in the State of Georgia.

Experience: May be a new graduate.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

May work in outpatient department, inpatient department, industrial sites, or other community events. May be required to work a flexible schedule. Exposure to hazardous chemicals and equipment found in a typical therapy setting. Rotates weekend/holiday coverage for Department.

Required to display characteristics consistent with registration requirements and ethical practice in Physical Therapy. Performance Standards

1.3 Assesses and interprets age specific data to facilitate appropriate patient care

infant, adult, adolescent, child and geriatric.

Acquires and maintains the skills necessary to perform treatment and procedures in the Rehab Care

Department as directed by PT.

Prepares patients according to Departmental policy through proper draping and positioning for

Administers patient treatment as directed by the PT in accordance with established Departmental

policy and professional standard.

Monitors patient during treatment and modifies treatment in consultation with the PT with no more

than two (2) documented incidents per year.

Documents ongoing treatment according to departmental policy complying with all recommended protocols and treatment guidelines as directed by physician and/or protocol standard and evidence based practice..

Provides for patient safety at all times including safe patient transportation as per departmental policy.

Performance Standards

2.7 Assists with safe patient transport as requested by the PT.

JCAHO and Department policy.

Contributes to the efficient and productive operation of the Rehab Care Department.

Demonstrates effective time management skills by completing patient care assignment within shift.

Manages use of equipment and treatment space efficiently by coordinating with other staff members.

Maintains continuous effective communication among the Rehab Care staff by participating in staff

Orients new personnel as requested according to Department policy.

Maintains professional skill level as documented by attendance at professional seminars and

Reviews current literature in the field as demonstrated by contributing this to staff inservices or conferences.

Assists with at least one (1) inservice per year to Rehab Care staff.

Participates in community education program as requested.

Completes appropriate number of formal continuing education hours as required by Georgia State Board of Physical Therapy.

Completes special projects/program development as deemed appropriate by Administrative Director,

Rehab Care, by participating in at least three (3) of the following annually:

Operates and maintains equipment and environment in a safe and orderly manner.

Acquires and maintains skills necessary to use equipment properly according to Department policy.

Notifies supervisor of any equipment failure or problem as soon as identified ,appropriately labels/marks the malfunctioning equipment, removes from immediate treatment area, and calls CE Services, maintenance, or appropriate contract repair service company to report the problem.

Utilizes equipment according to safety standards for each equipment type and according to

established departmental policy.

Utilizes good body mechanics in the operation of equipment as demonstrated by no reported incidents.

Returns equipment to proper storage area in good working order with no more than one (1) valid

complaint by coworker.

Keeps equipment and treatment areas clean.

Promotes the Hamilton Medical Center philosophy to ensure quality of care.

Provides positive, supportive communication to patients, families, visitors, and medical center personnel.

Collaborates with other departments of the medical center and outside agencies to meet the identified
