The Writing, Math and Accounting Learning Resource Centers provide supplemental academic support to Southern University at New Orleans students. The Part-time Math Tutor provides in-person and virtual tutoring to individual students and small groups to strengthen their understanding of mathematics concepts, course content, problem-solving methods, and related academic skills. The overarching goal is to promote student learning, academic confidence, persistence, and success in mathematics courses.
The Tutor communicates student progress and learning needs to the Director, maintains accurate tutoring and participation records, and uses varied instructional approaches and learning technologies to support students from diverse backgrounds and with differing learning needs.

GRANT FUNDED POSITION STATEMENT

This position is fully funded through the federally funded Title III-B Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program grant awarded by the U.Department of Education. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding, continuation of the program, programmatic needs, satisfactory job performance, and achievement of applicable grant objectives. The employee must comply with federal Title III requirements, grant terms, institutional policies, documentation standards, and reporting requirements, including preparation and submission of applicable annual performance and program reports.

Provide scheduled and drop-in mathematics tutoring in person and through approved virtual platforms to individual students and small groups.
Maintain current knowledge of mathematics content offered through the lab and adapt tutoring methods as curricula, software, and learning needs change.
Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records of tutoring sessions, attendance, service, and student progress for assessment, grant reporting, and monthly performance reports.
Assist with collecting, verifying, and compiling participation and outcomes data in coordination with the Director.
Support day-to-day lab operations, including opening and closing procedures, maintaining an orderly learning environment, monitoring supplies, checking communications, and reporting technology issues.
Assist students, faculty, and staff with approved lab resources and technologies, including mathematics course platforms, Microsoft Word and Excel, printing resources, and other learning tools and technologies.
Respond to inquiries concerning lab hours, procedures, services, resources, and tutoring methods and refer matters outside the position's authority to the Director.
Protect student information, maintain secure files and work areas, and comply with FERPA, University policy, and applicable grant documentation requirements.
Perform other related duties consistent with the position and grant as assigned.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
At least two years of experience teaching or tutoring mathematics at the postsecondary level.
Previous experience working in higher education or an academic learning-resource center.
Experience supporting international students, multilingual learners, students with disabilities, or other students with distinct learning needs.
Ability to tutor students in College Algebra and its prerequisite and co-requisite courses; Elementary Statistics; Strong command of relevant mathematics content and the ability to explain concepts clearly using multiple instructional methods.
Effective interpersonal, verbal, written, customer-service, coaching, and active-listening skills.
Ability to support students with diverse cultural, educational, linguistic, and learning backgrounds, including students with disabilities.
Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook, virtual tutoring tools, mathematics software, and electronic recordkeeping.
Work is performed in a learning-resource lab, classroom, office, and virtual environment with frequent interaction with students, faculty, and staff. The position requires regular computer use, tutoring conversations, recordkeeping, and use of instructional technology. Work schedules may include selected evening hours based on lab operations and student needs.

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, communicate, use a keyboard and instructional equipment, and climb stairs as needed.
• Ability to lift or carry materials weighing up to 10 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

TIMEKEEPING AND OVERTIME

As a non-exempt employee, the incumbent must accurately record all hours worked. Overtime work must be authorized in advance and will be compensated in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and University policy. Eligibility for University benefits is determined by the employee's appointment percentage, employment category, applicable plan requirements, and University and Southern University System policies.
