Job Title: Phlebotomist

The phlebotomist plays a key role in safely collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting a smooth and efficient workflow in a busy clinical practice. This role involves performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training as needed, and recommending improvements to workflow to ensure high-quality patient care and accurate laboratory results.

Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and care.

• Clearly and courteously explain the blood draw and specimen collection process to patients, including procedures for urine and fecal samples when required.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to maintain a clean and safe work area.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure all documentation is complete and correct.
• Fully understand and follow physicians orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling.
• Provide professional, empathetic customer service to patients from diverse age groups, including pediatric and geriatric populations.
• Assist with troubleshooting routine specimen collection or processing issues and contribute suggestions for improving workflow efficiency.
• Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures when requested.

6 months+ of phlebotomy or related clinical experience.

• Proven ability to perform blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage according to established procedures.
• Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders or computer labels.
• Ability to accurately update patient information and record maintenance data in relevant systems.
• Effective customer service skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients.
• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• High school diploma or GED.

This position is based in a busy family practice office that serves a wide range of patient populations. The environment is very fast paced, with approximately 2535 patients seen per day, primarily in the morning. While the practice is family-focused, children are rarely drawn. Standard hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. with work every other Saturday. The role involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, consistent use of phlebotomy and specimen processing equipment such as needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges, and adherence to established safety and infection control procedures. Professional clinical attire is expected, suitable for a medical office and direct patient care.

This is a Contract position based out of Woodbridge, VA.
