On Site Construction/Engineering Inspection

Your Impact

As a Construction Engineer, you’ll join our collaborative team providing award‑winning engineering, construction management, and design‑build project delivery. We are looking for a construction engineer with a background in highway/roadway, bridge, sewer/water, and transit construction. You’ll join our Chicago‑based team to provide construction engineering and inspection services on various infrastructure projects in northeast or north central Illinois, as well as southeast Wisconsin.

Reporting to and supporting the Resident Engineer or Project Manager

Working independently to manage and complete assigned tasks

Reviewing and understanding construction plans, specifications, submittals, and contract documents

Performing daily inspections to verify that the contractor’s work is being completed in accordance with the contract documents

Preparing daily construction reports that identify the contractor workforce, equipment, and activities, site visitors, and include daily progress photos

Preparing regular status reports and maintaining current and accurate record drawings

Keeping the Resident Engineer / Project Manager informed of the contractor’s progress and activities

Reviewing contractor QC documentation and checklists

Documenting meeting minutes

Reviewing inspector daily reports and material documentation

Maintaining the project quantity book

Reporting and documenting any field conditions that deviate from the contract

In this role, you’ll also communicate with all members of the Jacobs team, client, and contractor and work together to mitigate or eliminate project risks. You’ll be accountable for interacting with our construction sites, clients, and management to support the project team. Your keen ability to communicate effectively and maintain organized documentation records will be key to tackling project challenges.

Here’s What You’ll Need

4–8 years of experience in water/sewer, roadway, bridge, and/or transit construction engineering and inspection services

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or a related discipline

Local to and ability to commute to/from project locations in northeastern Illinois or southeastern Wisconsin

Proficiency with Microsoft applications, including Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook

Working knowledge/experience utilizing project management software such as eBuilder, InEight or CMMS

Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills

Ideally, You’ll Also Have

Current IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities certification

Experience on Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), Chicago Department of Water Management (CDOWM), Metra and/or Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) projects

Experience on Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) projects

OSHA 10- or 30‑hour training

Engineer in Training (EIT) certification

Ability and desire to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) license or Certified Construction Manager (CCM)

Proficiency with Bluebeam

Working knowledge of MicroStation, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Project

The base salary range for this position is $80,000.00 to $119,925.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
