Job Description Summary
MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) is an entity within the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) that provides healthcare to patients within the rural health network throughout the state of South Carolina. The Certified Medical Assistant performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes. Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician.

Job Description

Certified Medical Assistant reports to the Outpatient Clinic Manager. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height), and records or inputs information to electronic medical records. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.

Basic computer skills; maintains annual competencies. Understands and implements detailed instructions, makes accurate physical observations of patients, and communicates effectively both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

Completion of an accredited medical assisting program with one year of patient care experience preferred.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Certified through the American Medical Technologist (AMT) or American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or National Health Career Association (NHA) or MedCA as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP).

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working from elevated areas, confined or cramped spaces, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, with fingers and hands, firm grasping, overhead reach, repetitive motions, balance and coordination, and reach in all directions.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted; lift/lower 50 lbs. from/to floor at 36 inches unassisted; lift up to 25 lbs. from 36" to overhead; apply up to 50 lbs. of force; assist 100 lb. patient transfer requiring 50 lbs. of force; ability to push 400 lb. patient in wheelchair requiring 20 lbs. of force; push a stretcher with patient requiring 25 lbs. of force; transfer 100 lb. patient requires 50 lbs. of force with assistance from another worker.

Maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or both; discern colors, match colors, determine distance/relationships, depth perception.

Maintain hearing acuity, with correction.

Perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements; work rotating shifts, overtime, latex safe environment, tactile sensory functions, olfactory sensory function, respirator use as required.
