Position Summary This position demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills for performing diagnostic cardiac sonography examinations and cardiology procedures. The role provides data for diagnosis of disease and injuries in accordance with all applicable standards, regulations, and licensing requirements. The position demonstrates focused critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an outcome-oriented approach to care.

Position Duties Basic and Advanced Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography

Performs diagnostic cardiac sonography examinations on patients across the spectrum of congenital and acquired heart disease for interpretation by cardiologist. Determines proper technique and positioning to ensure optimal results in accordance with all applicable standards, protocols and procedures.

Performs or assists with pediatric and/or adult congenital cardiac sonography exams and procedures as well as demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills as required and per training and expertise. Must regularly demonstrate mastery and understanding of complex pediatric congenital echo and be willing and able to teach others (fellows, peers, etc) as opportunity allows.

Maintains a safe environment for patients, families, and coworkers while performing all activities of the job.

Documents Preliminary Report

Creates a detailed report of sonographer`s impressions to include pertinent medical history, anatomic findings and measurements for presentation to interpreting physician. It may include exam aspects outside sonogram results that may relate to diagnosis or treatment, including, but not limited to, patient reaction to temperature, pressure or movement of transducer, ability to respond to instructions, and movement limitations. Report is clear, concise, and grammatically correct and utilizes appropriate spelling and punctuation.

Performs finalizing functions using Syngo and/or Electronic Health Record to facilitate timely and accurate results, charge capture and archival of studies. Takes steps to quickly remedy identified errors and omissions utilizing the chain of command as necessary.

Maintains Professional and Technical Competency

Continues to pursue knowledge and self-improvement by remaining apprised of current literature, practices, and new developments in the field. Attends staff meetings as required to stay up to date on departmental policies and procedures. Participates in and contributes to Phoenix Children`s educational offerings and off- site conferences/seminar. Completes self-directed learning via professional journals, texts and appropriate online resources to maintain continuing education credits as required for institutional and personal credentialing.

Participates in career development and leadership activities to support the function of the lab. Proactively evaluates practices and assists to create and implement changes to increase and enhance the effectiveness of workflow practices. Serves as preceptor to students, fellows and orientees in our program.

Instrumental in developing quality improvement initiatives. Continually integrates feedback into daily practice.

Care of Professional Environment and Equipment Maintenance

Participates in cleaning, re-stocking, re-supplying, and turnover of cardiodiagnostic exam rooms and equipment to provide for efficient, effective, and safe department operations. Enters information into departmental logs as required for accreditation documentation.

Identifies and troubleshoots malfunctions to ensure continuous proper and safe operations. Reports service needs and preventive maintenance issues as appropriate by utilizing the help desk and biomed service tickets as appropriate. Enters data in departmental logs as required.

Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.

Education Do you meet this requirement or have the ability to obtain it within the timeframe listed in the requirement? 1. Graduation from a CAAHEP or ACCSC accredited cardiac sonography program or equivalent or 10 years experience in cardiac ultrasound.

Experience Do you meet this requirement or have the ability to obtain it within the timeframe listed in the requirement? 1. 6 years full time pediatric cardiac sonography.

Internal Candidates must have 3 years full time experience at Phoenix Children's with proven leadership skills and regular contributions to department projects in addition to primary imaging responsibilities. Outside applicants or applicants with less than 3 years at Phoenix Children’s must be able to demonstrate mastery of complex congenital heart disease and commit to participating in Lab and Leadership shared responsibilities once oriented to program.
