Job Description Self-Perform Estimator | McAlvain
We are seeking a detail-oriented and driven Self-Perform Estimator to join our preconstruction team. The primary purpose of this role is to provide estimating support for McAlvain’s self-perform concrete and civil work, including quantity takeoffs, bid document review, and subcontractor solicitations.

The Self-Perform Estimator will work closely with Preconstruction Managers, Project Executives, estimators, and operations teams to help develop accurate, complete, and competitive project estimates. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone who is organized, analytical, eager to learn, and interested in building a career in construction estimating. Field experience as a Project Engineer (PE) or Field Engineer (FE) is preferred, as is experience with self-perform concrete or civil construction, but neither is required.

Set up and maintain project file structures to ensure estimating documents, drawings, proposals, and other project information are organized and accessible
Prepare and maintain project low-downs to capture key project information, requirements, scope, schedule, and estimating considerations
Complete accurate quantity takeoffs for concrete or civil scopes based on project drawings and specifications
Review and validate bid documents to identify missing information, inconsistencies, scope requirements, and potential estimating issues
Solicit subcontractor and supplier proposals as directed to support complete and competitive estimates
Review drawings, specifications, addenda, and other contract documents to understand project scope and requirements
Assist estimators and preconstruction managers with developing accurate project estimates
Organize subcontractor and supplier responses and ensure proposals are properly documented within the project files
Support the estimating team in identifying scope gaps, discrepancies, and potential risks during the bidding process
Communicate professionally with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project team members
Work collaboratively with estimators, Preconstruction Managers, Project Executives, and operations teams to support successful project pursuits
Prioritize tasks and deliverables according to project deadlines and the needs of the preconstruction team
Take initiative to learn McAlvain’s estimating processes, systems, and self-perform operations
Continuously develop knowledge of concrete and civil construction, estimating practices, production methods, and project costs
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting deadlines
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
Ability to identify discrepancies and missing information in project documents
Ability to work collaboratively with both office and field teams
1–2 years of experience in construction, estimating, or a related field

• Experience working in both the field and office environments is preferred
• Field experience as a Project Engineer (PE) or Field Engineer (FE) is preferred
• Experience with self-perform concrete or civil construction is preferred but not required
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
• A degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is preferred but equivalent experience will be considered
