Carpenter Construction - Installation

Summary

Position functions as a Carpenter for the Eastern Kansas Health Care System – Facilities Management Service – and performs a full range of carpentry and related maintenance duties, placing a high emphasis on general carpentry and interior renovations to maintain a safe and functional environment.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 06/22/2026. Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but applicants must demonstrate sufficient scope and quality of training or experience to perform the duties of this position. Evidence of knowledge, skills, and ability must be supported by detailed descriptions on the resume. Applicants will be evaluated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards and a screen‑out element. Eligible candidates are then rated against job elements such as equipment assembly, installation, repair, interpreting instructions, technical practices, and use of tools. Volunteer experience, including National Service programs, is also credited. Physical requirements include standing, stooping, bending, climbing ladders, and handling equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Considerable standing, stooping, and bending are required. Work may involve climbing and working from ladders or scaffolds in cramped or awkward positions. Using hand tools requires significant arm and hand movement and dexterity. Items up to 40 pounds may be lifted and carried; heavier items are infrequently carried with assistance. Work is performed in a shop area and outdoors, exposing employees to cuts from tools, flying chips, splinters, sawdust, and varying weather conditions. Work on roofs and ladders is required. The shop is well heated, cooled, and ventilated.

Duties

Constructs, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures such as windows, doors, floors, ceilings, and cabinetry.

Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements.

Operates woodworking machines and hand tools to cut, shape, and form wood, plastic, and other materials.

Installs frameworks, partitions, doors, and windows.

Prepares and applies coating materials on wood, metal, concrete, synthetics, and other surfaces using standard and special painting methods.

Repairs drywall and plaster, patches and finishes surfaces, and replaces damaged components to ensure paint‑ready condition.

Measures and calculates the quantity of wall covering needed for a wall‑covering task.

Uses metals, synthetic resins, plastics, patching compounds, pumice, and rottenstone to even out dents and scars in surfaces.

Conducts inspections and performs preventive maintenance, documenting work and ensuring compliance with standards.

Maintains all tools and equipment in operating condition.

Performs interior and exterior painting, including painting buildings, equipment, furnishings, and machinery.

Executes painting both inside and outside buildings, equipment, furnishings, and machinery using appropriate paint and equipment.

Performs exterior road striping and marking using appropriate paint and equipment.

Erects rigging, staging, and scaffolding as part of the painting operation.

Performs a variety of work in related construction trades.

Member of the snow removal team and may be utilized during inclement weather as needed.

Work Schedule

Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
