Laboratory Microbiologist, Bureau of the Public Health Laboratory

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH), Public Health Laboratory is seeking to hire licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist for the Laboratory Microbiologist II position.

Conducts routine and complex test on clinical specimens, and environmental samples.

Perform BSL3 testing of foods suspected to contain select agents (such as Bacillus anthracis and Yersinia pestis) that may be associated with investigated incidents of bioterrorism.

Processing samples submitted by law enforcement for biothreat agent testing in the BSL-3 using LRN microbiological/ molecular testing for BT agents.

Serves on the BTRL after hours on-call schedule and is considered a first responder by the PHL.

Ensures and maintains quality control and assurance activities.

Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and performs quality control procedures.

Participates in cross-training program at PHL for outbreak events as needed.

Maintains laboratory inventory supplies.

Ensures and maintains quality control and assurance activities.

Applicant must possess or be eligible for a New York State clinical Laboratory Technologist License as described in Article 165 of the New York State Education Law effective September 7, 2008.

Possess clinical laboratory experience; knowledge of standard infection precaution procedures and clinical testing experience.

LABORATORY MICROBIOLOGIST - 21513

Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a major in the biological, chemical, or physical sciences or medical technology, and one year of experience as a microbiologist performing at the technician or higher level in a clinical or environmental laboratory setting; An associate degree in medical technology, or sixty college credits from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) including six credits in mathematics and six credits in either chemistry or biology

A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization plus any combination of college education and experience described in "1" or "2" above to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience. One year of experience credit will be given for each 30 semester credits of college education which includes at least 3 credits in mathematics and at least 3 credits in either chemistry or biology.
