The Medication Aide (MedAide) is responsible for safely administering medications and treatments to residents as ordered by authorized providers, in compliance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing regulations, facility policies, and established standards of care. This role ensures accuracy in medication administration, timely documentation, and prompt reporting of resident condition changes, while supporting resident dignity, safety, and well-being.

Essential Functions :

• Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and facility protocols, following the six rights of medication administration (right resident, medication, dose, route, time, and documentation).
• Take and record vital signs, observe residents’ conditions, and report changes, medication errors, or concerns promptly to the nursing supervisor.
• Maintain security, cleanliness, and organization of medication carts and storage areas, immediately reporting discrepancies in medication counts.
• Accurately document all medications and treatments at the time of administration, maintaining up-to-date medication administration records.
• Refer resident questions regarding medications to the nurse, physician, or pharmacist as appropriate.
• Assist residents with feeding, mobility, and activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed.
• Follow infection control, safety, and universal precaution protocols to protect residents, staff, and facility property.
• Uphold resident rights, confidentiality, and professional standards of care at all times.
• Use safe body mechanics and assistive devices when lifting, transferring, or supporting residents.
• Communicate and collaborate effectively with residents, families, staff, and other healthcare providers.
• Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and care planning as assigned.
• Comply with all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws, including HIPAA and the Code of Conduct, completing required training and reporting concerns promptly.
• This position is designated as essential to the operations of the organization. Team members in this role may be required to report into work (on-site at the community) during emergencies, inclement weather, or other situations when the organization remains operational.

Physical Demands

• Always required to stand, walk, and assist patients.
• Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Frequently required to bend, reach, push, and pull.
• Occasionally required to lift or assist in lifting individuals over 100 pounds with team or equipment assistance.
• Occasionally required to kneel or crouch.
• Visual acuity to observe patient condition and read charts.

Work Environment

• Always works indoors in resident-living area.
• Frequently exposed to bodily fluids and communicable diseases; PPE provided.
• Frequently works near residents experiencing physical or emotional distress.
• Occasionally exposed to strong odors, cleaning chemicals, and medical waste.
• Occasionally works in noisy environments due to equipment and alarms.
• Rarely works outdoors or in non-clinical areas.

Requirements: Qualification Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
• Valid North Carolina Nurse Aide I registry listing.
• Active on the Medication Aide Registry operated by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation.
• Current CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).

Preferred Qualifications
~One year of relevant experience working in long-term care or assisted living, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of safe medication administration practices, including documentation, controlled substances, and error reporting.
• Ability to administer medications via multiple routes (oral, buccal, sublingual, eye, ear, topical, transdermal, rectal, vaginal, nasal, inhalant) within state scope of practice.
• Skill in measuring and recording vital signs, recognizing changes in resident condition, and reporting promptly.
• Understanding of infection control, safety, and universal precaution practices.
• Clear communication skills for interacting with residents, families, nursing staff, and healthcare providers.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional ethics, resident rights, and professional boundaries.
• Competence in safe body mechanics and use of assistive equipment for lifting and transfers.
• Strong attention to detail, dependability, and accuracy in completing documentation and assigned tasks.
• Compassion, patience, and attentiveness in providing resident-centered care.
