Police Dispatcher

University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is a Catholic institution that welcomes persons of diverse backgrounds into its community. The UIW Police Dispatcher receives, assesses, documents emergency and non‑emergency calls, and dispatches UIW police and security officers to any campus or university location. The dispatcher reports to the University Police Lieutenant and works 24/7 in a round‑the‑clock operations center.

Prerequisite: Ability to successfully pass a physical and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment, as required by TCOLE standards.

Job Duties

Perform radio and telephone operations in a 24‑hour operations center.

Receive emergency and non‑emergency calls from staff, faculty, students and the general public.

Prioritize calls, obtain detailed information keeping composure, and disseminate information to appropriate personnel promptly.

Provide service, information and directions to campus community and visitors for non‑emergency calls for all campus police operations.

Enter and maintain accurate daily activity logs on radio consoles, telephone, fire alarm monitoring systems, and computer systems such as Report Exec.

Ensure compliance with all UIW Police Department policies and guidelines.

Check criminal records and backgrounds using the NLTS; enter stolen vehicle and other information into the database.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Effective oral communication via phone and radio, clear concise speaking voice and typing 25 wpm.

Ability to prioritize incoming calls and relay information promptly.

Maintain professional composure during high‑stress situations.

Good judgment in ensuring safety and welfare of UIW students, employees, visitors & property.

Adhere to attendance standards for a critical 24‑hour operations center.

Work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Adhere to all applicable U.S. rules & regulations, including the NCAA.

Education

High School graduation or GED equivalent.

Experience

Six (6) months of experience in a public contact, dispatching, or related role.

Preferred Qualifications

Some college.

One year of related experience including radio and computer usage.

Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

Valid driver's license or state ID (TCOLE licensure).

Successfully pass physical and psychological evaluation (TCOLE).

Willingness and ability to obtain Telecommunicator license within one year.

Work Hours

Rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and special events.

Current slots: 6am‑2pm, 2pm‑10pm, 10pm‑6am.

Physical Demands

Long, isolated shifts.

Good hearing, hand dexterity.

Use phones, police radio systems, and internal radio systems.
