Research fellow - and biology

SUMMARY Under supervision and following established policies and procedures, the candidate will conduct experiments ranging from molecular biology to histology, using in vivo and in vitro models. The candidate will be trained on minor surgery in animals. Skills include operating and maintaining monitoring equipment, collecting and analyzing data using statistical methodology, and reviewing literature for publication.

RESPONSIBILITIES Calibrate and set up equipment to monitor animal response and collect data during experiments.

Perform minor surgery on research animals, including inserting monitoring catheters, suturing, and electronically stimulating nerves.

Conduct experiments according to established protocols and research methodology using in vivo techniques such as stimulating nerves and administering drugs and hormones.

Use in vitro techniques following standard procedures, such as performing clinical assays on blood granulocytes.

Operate monitoring equipment to gather data on drug effects on nerves and use sophisticated equipment to analyze serum, tissue samples, etc.

Gather, tabulate, graph, develop explanatory charts, and analyze data using statistical methodology. May use computer programming to assist in data analysis.

Review literature relevant to the research area to better understand the work and gather data.

Perform routine laboratory cleaning and maintenance functions as required.

Prepare reagents and/or drugs for use in conducting experiments.

Participate in planning research protocols, developing research methodologies, and providing input for data interpretation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics, Epigenetics, Cancer Biology, or a similar field.

Working knowledge of statistics, computer programming, and research methodology.

Professional level knowledge of the scientific field germane to the research being conducted.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE No previous experience is required. Work will be performed in a laboratory environment with possible exposure to human and animal serum, chemical reagents, animal subjects, and radioactive materials. Hazards are minimized with adherence to established safety protocols.

WORK DETAILS Location: Rhode Island Hospital – 593 Eddy Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903.

Work type: 8:00am – 5:30pm, Day shift, 8 hours per day.

Driving required: No.

Pay range: $41,537.60 – $68,556.80.
