The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the role of Dentist for the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) located in Gig Harbor, WA.
The dentist position functions as a member of Washington Corrections Center for Women Health Services Unit and is responsible for providing and ensuring the provision of dental services that are consistent with the provisions of Department policy and Offender Health Plan dental protocols. In doing so, this position contributes to improvement in patient health, which contributes to a reduction in criminal recidivism.
The Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) is a 62.6-acre facility located approximately two miles from Gig Harbor. The site includes living units, administration buildings, a health clinic, education buildings, a gymnasium, a chapel, industries buildings, food service buildings and support facilities.
Correctional Health is a rewarding career path at DOC, in which health care professionals treat a wide array of cases for patients residing in a state correctional facility. Health Services is responsible for basic primary care for incarcerated individuals. All disciplines within all of the 12 correctional facilities work closely together to reach a common goal, providing the best, most efficient, and cost-effective health care possible. Emphasis is placed on early identification of health concerns, care for acute and chronic health problems, and preventive care.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received. The dentist provides medically necessary dental care to patients. S/he provides clinical supervision to dental assistants and dental hygienists. These services provided are consistent with RCW, WAC, Department policy, and the WA State DOC Health Plan.
Reviews the patient's medical condition and consults with other providers.
Makes oral examination of patients to determine oral health; records number of teeth, their condition, position, and relationship to each other; Diagnoses dental conditions and plans for their treatment. prescribes medication for treatment of diseases of dental nature; administers local anesthetic; takes digital dental radiographs.
Administer routine dental care and the treatment of urgent care dental problems that involve pain, trauma, and/or infection. Performs oral surgery, including surgical extractions, within the limits of the facility and personal expertise, endodontics, periodontics, restorative, and operative dentistry.
Determines extent of patient's cooperation and amount of dental service that can be provided in accordance with the Offender Health Plan.
prepares teeth for fillings and inserts filling material such as amalgam and resin.
Coordinates care with contract dentists and denturists.
Prepares reports concerning dental work and dental health of patients.
Accurately maintains patient and administrative records.
Actively participates in the Dental Care Review Committee (CRC).
Delegates clinical duties to dental assistants and dental hygienists in accordance with the WA State Laws (WAC & RCW).
Participates in Department training, continuing education, and coordinated quality improvement process (CQIP).
subject to emergency assignments to help with security in the event of an incarcerated individual(s) disturbance, civil disturbance, or natural disaster. Assist with the Trauma/Emergency Medical Team as deemed necessary.
Actively participates in CQIP at the facility level to include monitoring quality indicators for improving patient care and clinic operations.
Attend in-service education programs, mandatory training, and employee meetings.
A valid unencumbered Washington State license to practice dentistry,
Possession of unrestricted DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances.
Two years clinical experience in the practice of dentistry.
Experience and/or education in working with medical/dental documents, maintaining or processing health/dental records, and using medical/dental terminology.
Knowledge in the areas of scheduling routine/special dental procedures and patient visits.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications and related technologies.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
Holidays
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.
Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.
Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.
Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.
Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.
Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.
