Electrician

Position Title: Electrician

Location: Rogers Park–Lake Shore Campus, Facilities LSC.

Responsibilities

Ensure the safe operation of all electrical systems and equipment by completing preventative maintenance on controllers, transformers, voltage regulators, and machinery wiring.

Assist in maintaining emergency generator system equipment.

Obtain electrical work permits.

Stay current on all city and county electrical codes.

Work closely with contractors on site to ensure work performed meets current electrical codes.

Make suggestions and offer ideas for repairs of campus buildings.

Install new circuitry for equipment and lighting.

Perform work assignments received, both verbally and through the work order software system.

Maintain records of work performed using the work order management software system.

Assist supervisor with inventory control.

Perform work assignments to make campus facilities as safe and secure as possible for all students, staff, and faculty.

May, at times, be called upon to assist with snow removal.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Trade school or industrial apprenticeship degree in Electric or Electronic Trades.

Minimum of 5 years of electrician experience.

Journeyman Electrician License.

Knowledge in electronics, troubleshooting, problem solving, equipment maintenance, power tools, life safety, and technical understanding.

Knowledge of Chicago electrical codes and Cook County permitting requirements.

Ability to follow manuals, schematic plans, blueprints, and other specifications required.

Strong troubleshooting background.

Ability to use tools of the trade.

Ability to work in high and/or confined spaces.

Ability to carry materials to perform work functions.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Must supply own hand tools.

Ability to work irregular hours if needed.

Ability to work successfully with other trades to perform job duties.

Preferred: Prior work experience in a university or research environment.

Certificates & Licenses

Current Journeyman Electrician License, “A” Card in good standing.

Current Chicago Supervising Electrician License or equivalent (required).

Current driver’s license in good standing.

Member of IUOE Local 399 within 90 days of accepting the position and maintain good standing with IUOE Local 399.

Computer Skills

Knowledge and proficiency with computers.

Proficiency with MS Office software (Word, Excel, etc.).

Experience with a work order management system preferred.

Physical Demands

Lifting, carrying, standing, climbing, crawling/kneeling, repetitive motions.

Exposure to inclement weather; irregular hours.
