Additional Job Description POSITION DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE & CODE: ADVANCED PRACTICE PROFESSIONALS -Orthopedics – Total Joint Replacement Nurse Practitioner (85001) or Physician Assistant(85101) DEPARTMENT: Department of Orthopedics REPORTS TO: Administrator, Faculty Supervisor, Chairman ofOrthopedics FLSA STATUS: Exempt POSITION SUMMARY The Advanced Practice Professional(APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for thecomprehensive management of orthopedic patients, (includingbiological, social and psychological assessments). The APPcoordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teamsnecessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient, andreviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinicalteam, participates in directing that care, performsdiagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri-operative services, andcoordinates discharge planning/follow-up (as applicable). The APPparticipates in the education of residents and medical/nursingstudents.

Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and therequirements of the professional licensing or certificationauthority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Suchservice may include, but are not limited to. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’sDegree in Nursing

1. National Certification by one of the recognized APRNCertification Centers
2. Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professionalRegistered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in WestVirginia.
3. CNOR Certification.
4. BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Supporttraining at the discretion of the department.

EXPERIENCE: 1. Acute care, surgical or orthopedic experience preferred.

2. Eligible new graduates will be considered.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant, or Master’s Degree asPhysician Assistant required.

1. Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) trainingprogram required.
2. Certification by the National Commission for Certification ofPhysician Assistants required.
3. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board ofMedicine.

6. BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Supporttraining at the discretion of the department.

EXPERIENCE: 1. Acute care, surgical or orthopedic experience preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements describedhere are intended to describe the general nature of work beingperformed by people assigned to this position. Manages comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedicpatients and their families in the inpatient phase ofhospitalization and immediate post discharge in the ambulatorysetting.

1. Completes daily rounds; consults and/orpre-procedure/evaluations.
2. Completes integrated assessments.
3. With the collaboration of orthopedic faculty or by followingestablished clinical Guidelines and Protocols, orders additionaltests or consults as deemed appropriate.
4. Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests followingestablished clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
5. Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staffregarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
6. Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations anddocuments findings in medical record.
7. Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating appropriateservices and tests prior to discharge necessary for outpatientfollow-up appointments in the clinic (as applicable).
8. Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care fororthopedic patients, which includes teaching, discharge planningand necessary referral to other members of the health care team asnecessary.
9. Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the agecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.
10. Identifies unstable or complex orthopedic patient caresituations and facilitates appropriate intervention in the clinicand/or hospital setting.
11. Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effectiveemergency care.
12. Evaluates orthopedic patients and serves as a coordinator forfollow up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting (asapplicable).
13. Assists in the collection of outcome measures (asapplicable).
14. Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skillsin clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation andmanagement of the individual needs of patients/families.
15. Demonstrates the ability to utilize equipment in a safemanner.
16. Bases decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientificprinciples, established standards of care and/or researchfindings.
17. Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teachingstrategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospitalstaff, students, patients, families and the community.
18. Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by respondingto appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities and readinessto learn.
19. Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
20. Completes all identified clinical competencies.
21. Serves as a resource person for staff caring for the orthopedicpatient.
22. Provides educational programs to professional andparaprofessional personnel in area of expertise.
23. Participates in community programs, distribution of literature,as appropriate in area of expertise.
24. Documents the plan of care, interventions and evaluations in aclear and concise manner for every patient visit in the patient’smedical record following approved hospital/UHA policies andcompliance standards for documentation.
25. Collaborates with other leaders and staff to effectivelyachieve patient outcome based improvements in care.
26. Provides leadership in the development and implantation ofchanges in the orthopedic practice that positively impact patientoutcomes.
27. Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff tofacilitate creative problem solving and provide professionalsupport.
28. Participates and initiates inter-disciplinary approaches topatient care, program development and education. Serves as aprofessional role model.
29. Promotes and practices innovation of the expanded role in thedelivery of care to orthopedic patients and families throughout theinpatient hospitalization, and the ambulatory setting.
30. Participates and provides leadership for committees and taskforces.
31. Documents hours and submits billing reports, asappropriate.
32. Reviews and interprets orthopedic data from sources such aspatient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay,access to care, and cost per case reports and recommends/implementschanges as necessary.
33. Participates in clinical trials and research studies with thePrincipal Investigator.
34. Assists orthopedic Faculty, Administrators and Directors in thecollection of outcome measures.
35. Other duties/projects as assigned.
