Psychiatry, Full Time Psychiatry Physician

Summary The VA St. Louis Health Care System is looking for a Psychiatrist to serve as a Staff Physician on the Acute Inpatient Mental Health Units at the Jefferson Barracks Division. They will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on our acute mental health unit—along with several other psychiatrists, APRNs, social workers, psychologists, internal medicine consultants, health professional trainees, nursing, occupational therapy, and pharmacists.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy

Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed

Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia

Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification

Residency options: (1) Accreditation by ACGME or AOA according to the year completed; (2) One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; (3) Non‑US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States

PRPs may be appointed on an intermittent basis under specified conditions

Proficiency in spoken and written English

Physical requirements in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019, including intermittent lifting up to 10 lbs., sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, and operating machinery

Duties Serve as a Staff Physician on the Acute Inpatient Mental Health Units at Jefferson Barracks

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with psychiatrists, APRNs, social workers, psychologists, consultants, trainees, nurses, occupational therapists, and pharmacists

Participate in training for the St. Louis University Psychiatry Residency Training Program with ample opportunity for medical education

Provide diagnosis, treatment, and medical management of voluntary and involuntary admitted patients on acute mental health and residential units

Care for Veterans with PTSD, psychotic disorders, major affective disorders, and substance‑related disorders

Provide psychiatric consultations to physicians in other fields and serve as a resource for diagnosis and treatment

Participate in civil commitment processes

Provide oversight and supervision to trainees in all aspects of mental health services

Participate in performance improvement and peer review processes

Maintain regular, recurring contact with individuals representing diverse backgrounds, interests, and viewpoints

Participate in a rotating call schedule (minimal call a few times per year)

Serve on Medical Center, VISN, and National VA committees; represent the Medical Center at professional community group/events and conferences
