MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN - 40006526

The primary purpose of the Laboratory is to provide specimen collection and testing services to the Durham County Department of Public Health Clinics, Environmental Health, and Lincoln Community Health Center to assist with medical/environmental services that enhance the general health and well‑being of the county.

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for providing quality‑assured laboratory services.

This position must function with a high level of self‑direction and requires teamwork on a daily basis to solve patient care and analytical issues in the laboratory as they occur.

This position is expected to engage effectively in discussions with the Laboratory Supervisor, Technical Consultant, and clinicians. Verbal and/or written communications as well as excellent customer service skills are required.

General practical and theoretical knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area(s) of work;

General practical and considerable theoretical knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology;

General knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how the medical laboratory science is applied in the medical field;

Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and in the performance of procedures;

Ability to instruct students and other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation;

Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Laboratory Information Systems.

Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course, and one year of medical laboratory experience; or high school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of medical laboratory experience; Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and/or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or equivalent

To further the mission of the Durham County Department of Public Health to partner with our community to advance health equity, protect the environment, and promote health and wellness for all, DCoDPH is implementing the employee vaccination and tuberculosis screening policies. All DCoDPH employees are considered healthcare personnel (HCP) working in a health care setting with the potential for exposure to patients and/or infectious materials and, therefore, are required to comply and provide documented proof of the following:

Varicella‑Zoster Virus (Chicken Pox) vaccination/immunity

Hepatitis B vaccination/immunity - only required for DCoDPH employees with potential Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) exposures.

Identified DCoDPH HCP with potential Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) exposure have an additional requirement for the Hepatitis B vaccination. Required vaccination, serological testing to determine immunity, and baseline tuberculosis screening are available for all Public Health employees who elect to become DCoDPH patients upon request and at no cost.

Proof of vaccination and tuberculosis screening must be provided to Human Resources within seven (7) business days prior to the date of employment.
