The Greer Group is seeking a Director of Accounting for our retirement community client located in Pittsboro, NC. This is an immediate, direct-hire opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who is interested in joining a mission-driven organization and leading its Accounting department.
Position Summary:
- The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing the organization’s daily accounting and financial operations while providing leadership, guidance, and strategic support to the Finance department. This position manages the accounting team, oversees the general ledger and month-end close processes, prepares and analyzes financial reports, supports budgeting and forecasting, coordinates audits, and ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards and internal policies.
- The ideal candidate is a self-motivated accounting professional who takes ownership of their work, is comfortable working independently while seeking guidance when appropriate, and enjoys partnering with leadership and department managers to support sound financial decision-making.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Financial Operations—
- Direct the daily workflow and operations of the Accounting department.
- Oversee and serve as a backup for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, reconciliations, and cash flow functions.
- Oversee monthly and year-end closing processes and ensure financial records are accurate and complete.
- Monitor accounting processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Ensure financial transactions are properly recorded, reconciled, and supported by appropriate documentation.
Financial Reporting & Analysis—
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements and other financial reports.
- Assist with the development and monitoring of budgets and financial forecasts.
- Lead monthly financial and variance reviews with department managers.
- Consolidate and analyze financial data and communicate meaningful findings to leadership.
- Provide financial information and analysis to support organizational planning and decision-making.
Compliance & Internal Controls—
- Ensure accounting practices comply with applicable GAAP standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop, maintain, and strengthen internal accounting controls and procedures.
- Monitor financial processes for accuracy, compliance, and appropriate segregation of duties.
- Maintain accurate and organized financial records in preparation for internal and external review.
Team Leadership—
- Directly supervise the Accounting department staff.
- Assign and delegate responsibilities while ensuring work is completed accurately and timely.
- Train, mentor, and support accounting staff in their professional development.
- Establish expectations and provide ongoing guidance and feedback to promote a high-performing team.
- Review departmental processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
Strategic Support—
- Coordinate and support annual financial audits.
- Serve as a primary point of contact with external auditors and provide requested documentation and financial information.
- Prepare schedules and supporting materials for audit activities.
- Partner with the Senior Director of Finance and organizational leadership on financial initiatives and strategic planning.
- Provide financial insight and analysis to assist leadership with organizational decisions.
Education & Experience—
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- Previous accounting experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Experience supervising or leading accounting staff preferred.
- Experience with general ledger accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and audit preparation.
- Experience working in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization is a plus.
- Public accounting or audit experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities--
- In-depth knowledge of accounting and fiscal management principles, practices, and applicable regulations.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting and general ledger accounting.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated leadership and team-building abilities.
- Ability to analyze financial information and communicate findings clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
- Self-starter who takes ownership of responsibilities, anticipates needs, and works independently while seeking direction when appropriate.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when managing sensitive financial information.
