Utility Worker I (Temporary)

Job Summary

This position participates in Borough landfill and transfer site operations. Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork. This is a 6 month (from date of hire) temporary assignment expected to work forty (40) hours a week.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in a similar position, sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. Relevant experience may include: Drive fleet-small to medium size vehicles, operate skid steer, familiarity with vehicle and equipment inspections, skilled in using hand power tools and ability to perform duties in all weather conditions. Ability to direct traffic, pickup trash, install signs, build barriers and work as a member of team. Current HAZWOPER certification or ability to become HAZWOPER certified within six months of hire date. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Please note: Employees assigned driving duties/responsibilities, must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience. Certification in Asbestos Identification. Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check and physical.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Monitors the central landfill; ensures customer compliance with policies and procedures.
• Effectively answers questions from the public to provide information and resolve complaints.
• Closes and opens disposal sites; keeps disposal areas clean and functional.
• May operate a variety of heavy equipment.
• Develops and plans special projects.
• Builds and constructs retaining walls, signage, retaining nets, and fencing.
• Assists with the repairs and remodels of transfer site buildings.
• Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools.
• Maintains chainsaws, weed eaters, chop saws, and other hand and power tools.
• Assists in the maintenance and repairs of division equipment.
• Monitors automated scale to ensure accuracy.
• Monitors the disposal of Asbestos and other special waste in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
• Conducts snow removal operations.
• Maintains grounds at all division properties.
• Assists in the scale house as required.
• Performs related duties.

Temporary and Thousand Hour (1000) employees for the Mat-Su Borough do not receive a benefits package. Following is a brief description of the only benefit provided to this class of employee. Alaska Supplemental Benefits System: The Supplemental Benefits System (SBS) is in lieu of Social Security and is mandatory. An employee contributes at 6.13% of gross wages, matched by the Borough (6.13%), on the present wage base of $176,100.
