Position Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week)

QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications include the following:

Associate degree in Nursing (ADN) from accredited college or university required; BSN preferred.

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing with the State of North Dakota required.

Two years of RN experience required, management experience preferred.

Knowledgeable of current surgical department related issues and of health care trends pertinent to clinical areas.

Must have active BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification.
- OR -

A Registered Nurse must oversee nursing skills in the surgery department if Surgery Director meets these qualifications:

Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology college or university required.

Current UAP license in good standing with the State of North Dakota required.

National certification as CST through NBSTSA required.

Two years of CST experience required, management experience preferred.

Knowledgeable of current surgical department related issues and of health care trends pertinent to clinical areas.

Must have active BLS certification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assure that surgery nursing practices are consistent with the policies and procedures of Tioga Medical Center and that the quality of care is consistent with the State Health Department requirements.

Assist administration in the development of policies and procedures that affect OR, Recovery, and Central Supply. She/he is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of these policies within the departments and to review and revise (if necessary) the policy manual on an annual basis.

Arrange the surgery schedule through consultation with the physicians and clinic staff.

Check supplies tri-weekly and is responsible for ordering. Keep administration informed of all new items prior to purchase.

The Surgery Director is responsible for keeping the surgery department within budget and for efficient use of OR time.

Plan and coordinate the work schedule for elective surgery and schedule staff on a call basis for emergency surgery.

The Surgery Director will participate in infectious control and quality assurance studies. Will follow OSHA guidelines for infection control and participate in evaluation of environmental safety and intervene when indicated.

Conduct meetings between the OR, PAR and anesthesia personnel.

Collaborate with environmental and maintenance services to maintain a clean surgical environment and see that all electrical services are in proper working order.

Act as liaison between administration, physicians and the patient care team. Provide information regarding current problems, goals and objectives.

Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, coaches, evaluates, rewards, disciplines, and when necessary, terminates employees working in the surgery department. Only a Registered Nurse may train nursing staff in nursing skills.

Must have knowledge of health care trends pertinent to clinical areas.

Assist in maintaining cooperation of all departments of the hospital and the clinic to ensure continuity of care, to ensure that the OR schedule will run without delay, and to see that the patient is given the best possible care.

Assist and support the Director of Nursing and administration in solving problem areas.

Attend Department Head, department, in-services, and other various meetings.

May be required to travel to attend work-related meetings and educational opportunities.

Perform all duties or tasks requested by the COO and/or CEO.

ADDITIONAL TASKS

Treats all residents and patients with dignity and respect. Promotes and protects all residents' and patients' rights.

Establishes a culture of compliance by adhering to all facility policies and procedures. Complies with standards of business conduct, and state/federal regulations and guidelines.

Understands and demonstrates knowledge of infection control practices, Universal Precautions, OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Standard, and follows compliance with established policies and procedures.

Maintains confidentiality of protected health information, including verbal, written, and electronic communications.

Reports noncompliance with policies, procedures, regulations, or breaches in confidentiality to appropriate personnel. Reports any retaliation or discrimination to CEO.

Reports any allegations of abuse, neglect, misappropriation of property, exploitation, or mistreatment of residents to supervisor and/or administrator. Protects residents and patients from abuse and cooperates with all investigations.

Reports any occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals in accordance with facility policy.

Participates in all life safety and emergency drills and trainings. Fulfills responsibilities as assigned during implementation or activation of the facility's emergency plan.

Reports work-related injuries and illnesses immediately to supervisor.

Follows established infection control policies and procedures.

As a condition of employment, completes all assigned training and skills competency.

Must not pose a threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Meets general health requirements according to facility policy, including medical and physical exams and checking immunity status to various infectious diseases.

Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time at a desk while working on a computer.

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.

Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, perform overhead lifting and perform other common physical movements as needed for the position.

Ability to maintain good balance, stand for prolonged periods of time.

Must have good visual, audible, hand and finger dexterity as required for duties of the position, according to NDBON guidelines and TMC policies, and perform CPR.

Must have the mental capability to manage the department of OR/CSR in relation to number of personnel needed, arranging inservices, problem solving, following a budget.

Must have the mental capability to keep informed of new methods and technology.

Must be motivated to establish plans for improving the department to accomplish work with efficiency and economy.

Must possess outstanding organization and leadership skills, thorough understanding on management theories, and willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel.

Must possess basic computer skills, such as navigating electronic medical record systems.

Ability to complete forms and records, both electronically and on paper.

Ability to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.

Ability to assist in evacuation of residents and patients during emergency situations.

Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases and/or conditions which include AIDS, Coronavirus, Hepatitis B, and Tuberculosis.

May be subject to falls, burns from equipment, and/or odors throughout the day; encounter reactions from dust, disinfectants, and other air contaminants.

May be subject to hostile or emotional residents, patients, family members, visitors or personnel.

Works in well-lit, ventilated area and in the operating room.

Subject to frequent interruptions.

Communicates professionally and often with medical and nursing staff, and other departments.

Subject to call-back during emergency conditions.
