We are seeking a Controller to own Maverick’s finance function end to end. Maverick runs its own books. Accounting, reporting, and financial operations for this business are owned here — with oversight from our corporate controller and external auditors, and with vendor invoice approval and payment handled by a corporate shared services team, but with the work, the judgment, and the accountability sitting with you. You and one Senior Accountant are the department. You will step into a function in good working order. We run a disciplined monthly close and produce a financial package leadership relies on. The opportunity ahead sits upstream of that: the operational processes feeding the close and the reporting — premium and commission flows, carrier settlement, cash application, and the systems behind them — are where the next round of improvement lives. Making those faster, cleaner, and more automated is a substantial part of this role. This role suits someone who wants the whole scope rather than a slice of it. You will close the books, but you will also sit in on program economics discussions, tell the President what a product line genuinely earns, and decide which process gets automated next. Reporting directly to the President and working alongside the Chief Underwriting Officer and VP of Product, you will have a real hand in how this business is run. Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Reporting Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close — general ledger, journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals — and deliver accurate financial statements on a predictable calendar. Maintain the chart of accounts and accounting policies appropriate to an MGU, an insurance agency, and a warranty administrator operating under one roof. Own the year‑end audit and any carrier, lender, or corporate review: prepare the schedules, manage the requests, and serve as the single point of accountability. Deliver the monthly financial package and the reporting our leadership, corporate, and partner stakeholders rely on, and ensure Maverick’s numbers stand up to outside scrutiny without rework. Insurance & Warranty Accounting Own premium trust and fiduciary accounting — ensuring premium funds are held, segregated, reconciled, and disbursed in accordance with Florida Statute 626.561 and the requirements of every state in which we operate. Reconcile carrier statements and manage carrier settlements: premium due, commissions retained, taxes and fees, and outstanding balances, on the cadence each partner requires. Own commission accounting end to end — agency and MGU commission, contingent and profit‑sharing arrangements, and producer compensation. Support bordereaux production and reconciliation for warranty programs, partnering with Underwriting to ensure reported data ties to the ledger. Account for structural warranty obligations, including reserves, unearned revenue recognition, and program‑level claims cost. Business Performance & FP&A Build and own the annual budget and rolling forecast, and hold the business accountable to it through disciplined variance analysis. Deliver program‑ and product‑level P&L so leadership can see what each carrier program, warranty product, and revenue line actually earns. Develop the KPIs, dashboards, and management reporting the leadership team uses to run the company — and make sure they are used. Serve as a genuine thought partner to the President and other executives on program economics, pricing discipline, and where capital goes next. Treasury, Cash & Payables Own cash management and forecasting across operating and premium trust accounts, banking relationships, and the controls governing every outbound movement of funds. Partner with our corporate shared services team, which handles vendor invoice approval and payment execution, and own the accounting side of it: coding, accruals, cutoff, expense allocation, and pulling that activity into Maverick’s books accurately and on time. Protect the collection discipline that keeps Maverick effectively receivable‑free, ensuring premium and program billing is collected on terms and that any exception surfaces immediately rather than at close. Assist shared‑services with payroll coordination, benefits accounting, and expense administration. Controls, Compliance & Risk Design and maintain internal controls appropriate to a company of our size — segregation of duties, approval thresholds, and documented procedures that survive turnover. Coordinate federal, state, and local tax filings with outside advisors, including premium tax, surplus lines tax, and municipal fee obligations. Maintain the licensing, registration, and regulatory filing calendars, and ensure nothing lapses. Systems, Automation & Process Own the automation agenda for finance: reduce the manual steps in reconciliation, settlement, and reporting, and get the agency management system, warranty platforms, and general ledger properly integrated. Partner with Maverick leadership and the in‑house engineering team to automate reconciliation, reporting, and payment workflows. You have direct access to engineering capacity and are expected to use it. Apply AI and automation where they measurably reduce cycle time or error rate — not where they simply look modern. Leadership Hire, develop, and get real leverage from your Senior Accountant. In a two‑person function, how well you build that person determines how much of your own time goes to higher‑value work. Set the standard for accuracy, timeliness, and intellectual honesty in everything finance produces. Required Qualifications 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including at least two in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager role. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred. Demonstrated ownership of a full‑cycle close and the production of financial statements without a large team behind you. Strong technical GAAP foundation, and the judgment to know when a policy question needs outside help. Advanced Excel and genuine comfort pulling and manipulating raw data; working fluency with ERP/accounting systems and reporting tools. The disposition of a hands‑on operator: comfortable in the detail, willing to do the work personally, and able to keep sight of what the numbers mean for the business. Preferred Qualifications Insurance industry experience — MGA/MGU, retail or wholesale agency, program business, or carrier — with direct exposure to premium trust accounting, carrier settlements, and commission accounting. Structural warranty, home warranty, or service contract accounting experience, including reserve and unearned revenue treatment. Public accounting (audit) background, particularly with insurance or financial services clients. Experience integrating an agency management system or policy administration platform with a general ledger. A track record of automating manual finance processes, with measurable results from having done so. Maverick is simultaneously an MGU, an insurance agency, and a warranty administrator — which means fiduciary and trust accounting, multi‑carrier settlement, delegated authority reporting, layered commission structures, and long‑tail warranty reserves, all under one general ledger.
