Job Summary: n

Reporting to President Alivisatos and serving as a strategic business partner to and member of the President's executive team. The Vice President and Chief Financial Officer ("VP/CFO") works closely with the Provost, Deans, Faculty, Vice Presidents, and senior administrators throughout the University and Health System to manage and strengthen the University's business, financial, and administrative policies, and strategies to achieve the institutions goals in support of its academic, research, patient care, professional education, and service missions.

The VP/CFO will have the broad mandate from University leadership to oversee, coordinate and integrate financial, technological, and human infrastructure, institution-wide, while balancing central and decentralized responsibility and authority.

The VP/CFO will take a strategic approach in all areas of the University's financial, technological, and human infrastructure to ensure that decision-making, across the comprehensive portfolio is consistently, accurately, and effectively driven by strategic data and analysis; to consider the full range of opportunities for partnerships, internal and external to the University, and engagement with important constituencies and stakeholders; and to convey centrally and reinforce locally consistent communication about the University and the strategic interests and positions that are most critical to maintaining a strong and forward-looking financial position.

The VP/CFO provides executive leadership for the financial administration of the University including Financial Services, Controllership, Treasury / Capital Markets, Human Resources, Information Technology Services, Risk Management, Compliance, Internal Audit, and Shared Services, and shares responsibility for Commercial Real Estate (jointly with the Vice President for Civic Engagement).

Executive Leadership

• Working directly and independently with the President, Provost, Trustees, Deans and Vice Presidents, the VP/CFO develops and implements the financial plans required to support the University's financial framework and on a variety of other financial topics related to strategic and operational initiatives.
• The VP/CFO provides direct support of the Audit and Financial Planning Committees of the University of Chicago Board of Trustees and has oversight of the development of the Quarterly Financial Update for the University, provided to senior University leaders and the Board to analyze performance an identify trends and issues relevant to financial strategy and long-range planning.
• The VP/CFO is regularly called upon to provide leadership to a variety of institutional strategic and operating projects, working in close concert with other University Deans and Officers to provide oversight and guidance to facilitate the successful execution of projects across the university and around the world.
• The VP/CFO needs to be a collaborative, operational, and strategic partner to both the President and the Provost of the University. The Provost and the VP/CFO will work very closely together on establishing and implementing the University's budget.
• The VP/CFO needs to bring creative and innovative energy to the organization around revenue creation.

CFO Financial Responsibilities

• Key member of the senior leadership team responsible for enabling and ensuring the execution of the strategic plan via successful stewardship of its financial framework.
• Responsible for leading all aspects of the University's financial, treasury, internal audit and risk management strategy and for advising Officers and Trustees of the University on appropriate processes to ensure effective financial and risk management for the institution. The VP/CFO is primarily responsible for regularly assessing areas of risk for the enterprise and ensuring that senior leaders are engaged in risk mitigation efforts.
