Texas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is part of a national volunteer movement that began in 1977 in Seattle when a juvenile court judge conceived the idea of citizen volunteers speaking up for the best interests of children who are in foster care due to allegations of abuse or neglect. Today, the CASA movement has evolved into one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country. Judges appoint CASA volunteers to advocate for children in court, school and other settings with the goal of reuniting children with their families. Collectively, the local CASA programs in Texas serve the majority of Texas’ 254 counties. As integral members of their respective communities, they recruit, train, supervise and support court-appointed volunteers to advocate for the best interest of children. Local programs also coordinate and collaborate with other service providers who share the mission of supporting Texas families.   



 
Established in 1989, Texas CASA is the statewide membership association for all local CASA programs. In this role, we support the CASA network by serving as the administrator of state and federal funds, setting and monitoring standards, providing training, leading a statewide volunteer recruitment campaign, advocating for public policy and more. Texas CASA is committed to partnering with statewide stakeholders and the CASA network to elevate best practices when working with children and families. Texas CASA is a registered 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to support local CASA programs with training, community awareness, resources and public policy to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families in Texas.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Communications Manager will position and elevate Texas CASA as a leader in the child welfare community through internal and external communication. The Manager will develop internal and external print and digital materials, lead social media efforts, and offer design support for a variety of audiences, including the statewide CASA network, community partners and stakeholders, Texas CASA staff, and the broader public. The Manager will also manage media engagement. The Communications Manager works in partnership with the Communications Director, who provides strategic direction and oversight of the functions below, to execute Texas CASA’s communications strategy. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Content Creation & Writing

• Write and edit content for internal and external communication materials (e.g. newsletters, social media posts, media pitches, op-eds, press releases, website content, and talking points).
• Ensure all content is accurate and reflects organizational voice, brand standards, and messaging priorities.
• Partner with Communications Director and Chief External Relations Officer on development of annual communications strategy.
• Develop an annual content calendar in partnership with all Texas CASA’s departments and ensure unified, informed, and timely messaging.
• Manage Texas CASA email marketing platform, including newsletter development, list management, and campaign execution.
• Adapt tone and format of content for different audiences.
• Coordinate with local CASA programs to develop story ideas that exemplify the statewide CASA network.

Social Media & Design

• Lead social media strategy, including content calendar development.
• Manage day-to-day social media presence, including scheduling, posting, and community engagement.
• Design graphics for social media and Texas CASA materials, coordinating with external vendors as needed.
• Collaborate with the External Relations Division and other departments in the production of Texas CASA collateral materials, both in house and through contractors.
• Track and report on social media and email marketing performance.

Media & Events

• Manage media engagement, including responding to inquiries and maintaining press contacts.
• Provide as-needed support to local programs when media inquiries arise.
• Draft and distribute press releases.
• Monitor CASA and child welfare landscapes and news for general awareness and crisis prevention.
• Maintain digital image library of photo and video assets.
• Support photography and videography for use across communications channels, as needed for monthly and quarterly events.
• Support production of Texas CASA’s monthly podcast, CASA on The Go, which is recorded by our in-house Learning and Development Manager for Pre-Service Training.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

• Offer communications support and subject matter expertise to Texas CASA staff and local CASA programs.
• Manage Communications Intern.
• Analyze current communications processes and make recommendations to improve efficiencies and quality of services.
• Perform all other duties and complete special projects as assigned by the CEO, Chief External Relations Officer, and Communications Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

• Minimum of five years communications experience.
• Must pass background check.

Preferred

• Understanding of the child welfare system and CASA model, including emerging systemic changes.
• Experience in nonprofit, education, government affairs, or child welfare environments. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Exceptional writer, editor, and communicator across various formats and audiences, ability to write in multiple styles, strong knowledge of AP style.
• Demonstrated graphic design skills with proficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively, experience with Airtable and Asana a plus.
• High customer service standards.
• Experience with email marketing software and social media management.
• Flexibility and ability to adapt in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
• Working knowledge of Muck Rack preferred.
• Photography and videography experience preferred. 
• Podcast experience a plus. 
• Good interpersonal skills and willingness to cooperate with and communicate with all departments within the organization.
• Willingness to learn new things and take on new projects

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The primary office is Texas CASA’s headquarters in Austin, TX. Although work may be performed in a remote location requiring ongoing computer use, Texas CASA requires weekly transportation to the primary office at the discretion of the CEO. While in the primary office, the employee may be occasionally exposed to a variety of working and environmental conditions, that could involve intermittent physical activities including bending, reaching, sitting and walking during working hours.



 
The Communications Manager will be expected to have daily transportation to attend offsite meetings, and various events. Occasional out of town overnight travel may be required. Additionally, it is anticipated that the person may spend several hours each day seated at a computer. FLSA STATUS: Exempt

COMPENSATION: $75,000 - $80,000 commensurate with experience

BENEFITS: 

• 37.5hr full-time work week
• Hybrid schedule, in-office two days per week 
• Employer-subsidized health, life, and vision insurance for employee, including a fully paid employee-only health insurance option with $120/month contributed to employees' HSA
• Competitive PTO, including office holidays (15 days per year), vacation (14 days per year), personal time (5 days per year), volunteer time (8 days per year), and sick leave (12 days per year)
• Employer retirement contributions (amount equal to 5% of an employee’s gross pay)
