What does a Lead Stations Battery Technician do for us? The Lead Stations Battery Technician acts as a crew lead that plans and directs the work of the battery crew without the presence of a foreman. Works in a team and/or individual environment to install and test batteries, load centers, chargers, racks, and other associated equipment at substations, communication sites, and power plants. A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE Knowledge of: Related OSHA regulations, chemical safety, SDS and electrical safety work practices specific control systems, schemes and equipment used in distribution and transmission voltage level systems Utility system practices Station battery systems, test equipment, standards and design theory adhering to stations engineering and design and stations construction specifications Battery charger types, applications, theories and practices Equipment related to station control Computers Hand-held and power tools Proper lifting/transporting techniques for heavy objects AC and DC circuit theory Wiring diagrams, control schematics, and building layouts Dispatch functions Skills in: Substation work. Substation construction procedures. Battery testing and station checkout procedures. Ability to: Maintain good interpersonal relationships with co-workers and others Work independently Work well with people in other departments and train station apprentices and journeymen in battery work while leading and mentoring Battery Technician Crew Make changes in existing circuits which must be rewired while remaining in service Parallel temporary battery systems with station batteries and take station batteries out of service without interruption to station DC supply Recognize errors in battery systems and make recommendations to the designer for corrections Test and place in service battery systems and other equipment relative to their function Arrange shut down and switching, take proper clearance, and be responsible for the safety of their crew when working around any high voltage equipment Coordinate the work with other construction crews, regional crews, and system and local dispatchers Work out of town on back-to-back weeks Maintain accurate time and as-built drawings Meet deadlines and produce technical reports and documentation MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED AND Associates degree in electronics discipline with 7 or more years of work experience in an electrical or control wiring field, including at least 5 years of electrical experience in substations OR State recognized Journeyman Electrician License with 5 or more years of electrical experience in substations outside of apprenticeship hours OR Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship with 5 or more years of electrical experience in substations outside of apprenticeship hours OR An equivalent combination of education and work experience Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire Must have a current DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 383 Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an attached State-issued Hazardous Materials endorsement or have the ability to attain within 120 days of hire Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires the ability to occasionally bend, stoop, squat, crouch, climb ladders, twist, kneel, balance and reach, and rarely crawl; occasionally lift above shoulder, waist-high and knee high items weighing up to 75 lbs.; occasionally push or pull items using force of up to 50 lbs.; occasionally carry with one or two hands items weighing up to 75 lbs. Occasionally use fine and gross hand manipulation when working with tools or equipment; occasionally use foot controls when driving. Job sometimes requires working outdoors in adverse weather conditions or in confined spaces. Applicants must perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Lead level position will be filled based on business need and is not an automatic progression from a technician position. This position requires extensive travel across Idaho Power’s service area. The work schedule for this position may change week to week. Typical work schedule includes working four 10-hour days or working eight 10-hour days in back-to-back weeks. Each workday may be an out-of-town, overnight stay. This position requires the ability to work overtime and weekends when business need requires. Must abide by Idaho Power Company's safety rules and regulations.
