Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Essential Duties Transportation Engineer Tech I Performs basic design work. Prepares field notes. Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right‑of‑way maps. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Transportation Engineer Tech II In addition to the duties listed above. Performs intermediate design work. Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications. Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans. Minimum Qualifications Education : High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience : Transportation Engineer Tech I: No experience required. Transportation Engineer Tech II: 2 years of experience in drafting, design, plan preparation. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Valid Driver’s License . This position requires driving a state vehicle. Competencies Interactive graphic and design information systems Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Follow verbal and written instructions Performing basic design and drafting Intermediate design and hand and computer‑aided drafting procedures Higher mathematics Training in a classroom, office, or field environment Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection Subject to noise Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals Required to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other device Fingering – picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words Hearing – perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers Close Visual Acuity – work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading Visual Acuity – operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment Conditions of Employment This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
