POSITION: Two (2) - School Police Officers LOCATION: Elementary School (Schools to be determined) ANNUAL EMPLOYMENT: 7.50 Hours Per Day (10-month position) SALARY RANGE: $41,439.30/yr. - $44,026.50/yr. (Additional compensation from the Millage initiative will be awarded annually. For the 2026-2027 school year, the amount to be determined by NESPA bargaining and ratification and will be prorated from July 1, 2026. The amount for the 2025-2026 school year was $6,127.) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of a Florida criminal justice training academy (basic law enforcement recruit training program). Passing score on the Florida State Officer Certification Exam (proof of passing score to be submitted with application). Be of good moral character pursuant to 11B-27.0011 Florida Administrative Code and able to successfully complete a background check confirming eligibility for hire. Minimum of three years' experience in law enforcement as a sworn officer at the local or state level. Must possess a Florida Law Enforcement certification. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Awareness of the tenets of trauma informed care and mental health resources. Completion of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's 40-hour School Resource Officer Training Course. EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or GED. Law enforcement, security, or military experience or training. Experience with safe use of firearms, tasers, pepper spray, batons or Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Valid Florida driver license. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Satisfactory completion of First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course or agreement to earn within one (1) year of employment. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to pass a psychological evaluation as required by Chapter 1018-3, Laws of Florida. Ability to be physically and mentally prepared to respond in an emergency or potentially dangerous or deadly situation. Ability to safely use a firearm, taser, pepper spray, baton and/or other law enforcement related equipment. Ability to handle and prioritize multiple responsibilities. Ability to obtain information through observation and interviews. Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders. Willingness to use force when circumstances and established protocols dictate escalation; up to and including deadly force. Must submit to and pass an initial drug test and subsequent random drug tests in accordance with the requirements of Florida Statute Section 112.0455 and policies of the Nassau County School District. OTHER ASSIGNED DUTIES: Willingness to teach DARE and KNOW THE LAW curriculum to appropriate grade levels. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (1) Provide security and surveillance to school campus, including patrolling parking lots and grounds. (2) Provide security to school and district functions, including after-school and extra-curricular activities. (3) Investigate, monitor and report suspicious activity, including theft, vandalism, and criminal mischief to administration and when appropriate, to law enforcement. (4) Communicate with school administrators, students, parents, staff, and community members regarding security related concerns and issues; work cooperatively with law enforcement and district personnel. (5) Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action in accordance with established guidelines; provide basic first responder first aid services as needed. (6) Build relationships with students and stakeholders and assist with character education. (7) Supervise students; observe and manage students in halls, at lunch, and during other non‑classroom activities. (8) Manage school access by monitoring gates and other entry points throughout the school; ensure that students possess appropriate permission when leaving campus; observe and question potentially unauthorized persons on campus. (9) Assist with traffic control during student drop off and pick up. (10) Assist administration in performing searches of students and school property. (11) Suppress disturbances and security incidents according to established guidelines and procedures. (12) Deescalate confrontations between students, parents, visitors, community members and others. Communicate with school administrators, students, parents, district officials/personnel, community members, and others regarding security related concerns and issues. (13) Assist school administration and law enforcement with threat assessments. (14) Make recommendations and inform school administration, and other appropriate staff members regarding investigative activities and proper practices/procedures necessary to secure the safe and peaceful conduct of district and school business/activities. (15) Serve as liaison with School Resource Officers. (16) Serve on school safety committee and assist with student crime watch program. (17) Assist with security assessments at assigned school(s). (18) Prepare incident reports and supplement reports. (19) Assist with school safety drills under the direction of the administration. (20) Support school with the implementation of behavioral health services. (21) Serve as a district representative if emergency shelters are opened. (22) Make physical, custodial arrests. (23) Conduct basic investigation of criminal cases including collection and storing evidence as required. (24) Issue civil citations and other summons. (25) Testify at trials, hearings or Grand juries. (26) Perform student home visits or other site visits to investigate or minimize truancy. (27) Perform other related tasks/duties as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy Work: lift/carry/drag >175 pounds in an emergency. Administer First Aid/CPR. Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force as needed to move objects. Stand or sit donning approximately 30 pounds of law enforcement equipment. Qualify annually demonstrating sufficient firearms proficiency.
