Job Description

Gilead Sciences' Protein Therapeutics Department has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Scientist to join the Protein Science group. In this role, the successful candidate will support multidisciplinary research teams through the generation, purification, bioconjugation, and analytical characterization of biologic molecules. The ideal candidate will possess hands-on expertise and a strong scientific foundation in antibody purification, bioconjugation, and protein analytics. Working collaboratively with project teams, this individual will help advance therapeutic discovery programs by generating and characterizing candidate molecules and surrogate research tools. They will contribute to the evaluation and selection of lead candidates across a broad range of modalities, including bispecific antibodies, immunocytokines, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and other novel and complex biologics. Through scientific problem-solving, technical innovation, and data-driven decision making, the candidate will help accelerate the progression of large-molecule therapeutics from discovery to development.

Responsibilities:

• Design and execute protein purification, bioconjugation, and analytical characterization workflows to support therapeutic protein discovery and development programs.

• Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot purification and characterization methods for complex biologics.

• Analyze and interpret experimental data, draw scientifically sound conclusions, and recommend next steps to advance project objectives.

• Identify, evaluate, and implement new technologies and workflows to improve efficiency, throughput, and technical capabilities within the Protein Science group.

• Collaborate closely with therapeutic area biologists and cross-functional project teams to generate proteins and address project-specific scientific questions.

• Serve as a technical resource within multidisciplinary teams, providing expertise in protein purification, bioconjugation, and protein analytics.

• Present data and scientific findings to project teams and contribute to technical reports, invention disclosures, publications, presentations, and other scientific documentation.

• Provide technical training and mentorship to colleagues and support the development of departmental best practices.

Skills

• Strong scientific foundation in protein sciences

• Hands-on experience operating and programming ÄKTA Avant/Pure and/or Bio Rad NGC chromatography systems.

• Extensive experience in purification of biologic molecules using affinity chromatography (Protein A/G/L, CaptureSelect, Ni-NTA, etc.), ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, and mixed-mode chromatography.

• Experience performing, analyzing, and interpreting quality and characterization assays for antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).

• Proficiency in bioconjugation methods for protein and antibody-based therapeutics.

• Expertise in protein analytical techniques including HPLC/UHPLC, SDS-PAGE, CE SDS, endotoxin testing (e.g., Endosafe), and SEC-MALS.

• Working knowledge of construct design and molecular engineering for therapeutic proteins and surrogate tool molecules.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex datasets and effectively communicate scientific findings.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and 6 Years’ Experience

OR

Masters' Degree and 4 Years’ Experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with automated liquid handling and high-throughput protein purification platforms (e.g., Tecan).

• Experience with LC-MS characterization of biologics, including ADCs.

• Experience supporting the discovery and characterization of complex biologic modalities, such as bispecific antibodies, immunocytokines, and ADCs.

The salary range for this position is: $146,540.00 - $189,640.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
