Community Program Director

Variety KC is seeking a full-time Community Program Director to serve as the operational leader of the Community Programs department and be the primary strategic partner to the Chief Community Officer. This role ensures community initiatives, family services, and events are executed with excellence while balancing departmental priorities across the organization. Acting as the CCO's right hand, the Director oversees program operations, supports cross-department collaboration, manages departmental workflows, and supervises the Community Program Manager.

The Director is responsible for the strategic planning of the annual community calendar, evaluating program effectiveness, overseeing family-facing services, and ensuring community events are well coordinated. This position requires an organized leader who thrives on balancing competing priorities while supporting both staff and the families Variety KC serves.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, collaborative, and proactive. They are an exceptional communicator who enjoys building systems, supporting people, and solving problems. They can easily shift between strategic planning and day-to-day execution while maintaining a strong commitment to serving Variety KC’s community.

Job Responsibilities

Program Leadership 

• Annual program/community event calendar planning, broken out quarterly 

  • Working with Community Program Manager to understand what all is requested and scheduling delivery of events, gifts, etc. 

  • Working with CCO to understand what is going on across the entire organization and taking that into consideration when balancing the calendar 

• Program evaluation and quality assurance 

• Cross-departmental communication and collaboration 

  • Ensuring cross-departmental projects are advancing (marketing campaigns that involve families, community events that lean on Events department, etc.) 

• Oversees the implementation of the Variety Show, among other annual programs. 

Family Services 

• Grant program oversight (understanding how many requests are coming in, being fulfilled, being denied, etc. and communicating issues up the ladder) 

• Family communication strategy 

• Resource coordination (understanding financial bandwidth for additional community events, volunteer recognition, etc.) 

• CRM management, reporting, and analytics 

Community Events 

• Manages event needs and communicates with other departments as needed (ROS, vendors, creative, etc.) 

• Outlines volunteer, family, and therapist needs and fills them accordingly, ensuring event day needs are met 

  • Keeps CRM updated with pool of people to reach out to 

• Confirms what VKC employees or sponsors need to be engaged onsite and ensures participation 

• Manages and communicates with partners, families, and volunteers for the Variety Show. 

Staff Leadership 

• Direct supervision and support of Community Program Manager

• Staff coaching and performance management

Grant Support 

• Assist Community Program Manager with grant operations when needed

  • Should be able to pick up the grant cycle at any time to support the Manager, while the Manager will primarily own grant operations 

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required.

• 3–5 years of professional experience in program management, nonprofit operations, or a related field.

• Experience working with or serving the disability community strongly preferred.

• Strong project management and organizational skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

• Experience using CRM platforms for reporting and relationship management.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

• Self-starter with strong initiative and attention to detail.

• Collaborative leadership style with experience working across departments.

Salary and Benefits 

• Salary: $75,000
