Job Description

This role focuses on the precision assembly of large diesel and natural gas engines used in critical applications such as hospital backup generators, data centers, and large industrial vehicles. You will work with a wide range of mechanical and electrical tools, interpret detailed blueprints and work instructions, and apply strong mechanical aptitude to build complex, custom engines. This is not a basic assembly line position; it requires individuals who are highly mechanically inclined, comfortable troubleshooting, and capable of learning the technical aspects of engine assembly and in‑process repair.

Responsibilities

• Assemble large diesel and natural gas engines from multiple subassemblies, following detailed blueprints, engineering drawings, and customer specifications.
• Use a wide variety of hand and power tools, including torque wrenches, pneumatic air tools, DC (electrical) tooling, and basic wrenches, to perform precise fastening and assembly tasks.
• Manipulate and position heavy engine components using lifting devices and cranes, ensuring safe and accurate placement during the assembly process.
• Review and follow written work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and work orders on a CPU to ensure correct assembly steps and documentation of progress.
• Interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and schematics to determine correct parts, torque values, and assembly sequences for custom engine builds.
• Apply proper fastening, sealing, and torque techniques to ensure assemblies meet safety, quality, and performance standards.
• Perform in‑process troubleshooting and basic mechanical repair on engines during assembly to resolve issues and keep production on schedule.
• Conduct or support electrical and mechanical testing of assemblies using appropriate testing and measurement equipment as required.
• Work closely with a partner or small team within a designated zone on the main line to complete assigned assemblies efficiently and accurately.
• Follow established quality standards and processes to ensure all products meet specifications, including checking your own work for accuracy and completeness.
• Maintain a strong focus on safety by consistently using required personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to all safety rules and procedures.
• Keep the work area organized, clean, and free of debris to support a safe and efficient manufacturing environment.
• Participate in training and assessments, including written and hands‑on evaluations, to demonstrate competency in safety, fastening, sealing, hydraulic equipment, torque equipment, and quality practices.
• Work scheduled shifts and required overtime, including every other Saturday as production needs dictate, while maintaining reliable attendance and punctuality.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience working in an industrial environment performing hands‑on tasks with tools and equipment.
• Proven experience using mechanical tooling such as torque equipment, DC tools, hand tools, and pneumatic tools.
• Demonstrated mid‑level or higher mechanical aptitude; this role requires more than basic assembly or simple power tool use.
• Experience following written work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), blueprints, or similar technical documentation.
• Ability to use a CPU or computer to access and follow engineering drawings, work instructions, and process documentation.
• Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to perform accurate assembly work.
• Comfort working with hand tools, power tools, torque tools, and pneumatic tooling in a production environment.
• Ability to pass written and hands‑on assessments during the training period related to safety, fastening, sealing, hydraulic equipment, torque equipment, and quality.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality to ensure assemblies meet required specifications.
• Ability to work safely around large equipment, heavy components, cranes, and lifting devices.
• Capability to work effectively in a team environment, often partnering with another assembler in the same zone.
• Steel‑toed or composite‑toe shoes (required at start).
• Ability to meet required assessment benchmarks, including achieving at least the 21st percentile or above on the specified general labor assessment.
• Reliable attendance and the ability to work assigned shifts and scheduled overtime.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in automotive, diesel technician, lube technician, tire shop, farming, construction, maintenance, or facilities roles.
• Experience in mechanical assembly, automotive repair, industrial repair, or similar hands‑on mechanical work.
• Experience with diesel engines, engine components, or heavy equipment is highly beneficial.
• Familiarity with blueprint reading, tape measure use, and interpreting mechanical or electrical schematics.
• Experience in light industrial or electronic assembly environments, including wiring or electrical assembly, is an advantage.
• Exposure to production, assembly line, or general production environments.
• Experience with crane or hoist operation in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
• Comfort discussing and explaining past assembly projects, including tools used, steps followed, and quality checks performed.
• Ability to describe and apply quality standards and processes from previous roles to ensure high‑quality output.
• No diploma is required; candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and relevant hands‑on experience are encouraged to apply.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large, modern manufacturing facility in Lafayette, IN, with the building split between an assembly side and a machine shop. The environment is temperature‑controlled and kept very clean, with minimal debris such as metal scraps, packaging, or oil spills, reflecting a strong emphasis on safety. Assembly teams typically consist of two people working together, and the main line is organized into four zones, where team members work side by side on various subassemblies. Individual tasks, such as assembling oil pumps or coolers, may take around 20 minutes, though timing varies by area. Multiple shift options are available: 1st shift (6:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.), 2nd shift (2:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m.), 3rd shift (10:30 p.m.–6:30 a.m.), as well as alternating work schedule (AWS) shifts on weekends (1st AWS: 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Friday–Sunday; 3rd AWS: 6:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. Friday–Sunday), where employees work 36 hours and are paid for 36, with full‑time employees eligible for 40 hours of pay. Overtime is currently scheduled for every other Saturday through much of 2025, subject to change. The dress code is relaxed: sweatshirts, t‑shirts, hats, work pants, and jeans are acceptable, while leggings and sweatpants are not. PPE is mandatory and strictly enforced; steel or composite toe shoes are required, and earplugs and protective glasses are provided. The campus is tobacco‑free, with use of tobacco or vaping products only permitted during approved breaks in personal vehicles in the parking lot. Employees are expected to follow established call‑off procedures and maintain strong communication regarding attendance.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lafayette, IN.

The pay range for this position is $21.34 - $22.09/hr.
