The Colorado State Land Board, a state agency that manages a $6 billion endowment of assets for the benefit of K-12 schoolchildren, is looking for a Communications Associate who will assist with communications, marketing, and outreach. Your work will help us broadcast our longstanding contributions to the state of Colorado. What is the State Land Board? The Colorado State Board of Land Commissioners (State Land Board) is a constitutionally created agency that manages a $6 billion endowment of assets for the intergenerational benefit of Colorado’s K-12 schoolchildren and public institutions. The agency is the second-largest landowner in Colorado and generates revenue on behalf of beneficiaries by leasing nearly three million surface acres and four million subsurface acres for agriculture, grazing, recreation, ecosystem services, commercial real estate, rights-of-way, renewable energy, oil, gas, and solid minerals. Unlike public lands, trust lands are not open to the public unless a property has been leased for public access. The agency is entirely self-funded and receives no tax dollars. Though we are a 150-year old, Constitutionally-chartered agency, we take pride in being entrepreneurial and business-savvy. We compete in private sector markets daily and generate more than $300 million in revenue annually. On any given day you might find us presenting to the State Joint Budget Committee, meeting with agriculture lessees on one of our marquis properties, or hiking mountainous terrain to inspect our land. The Opportunity This is a 9-month paid internship offering $25/hour. The position is expected to work 40 hrs/week. The position is expected to begin in August 2026 and cannot exceed nine months. This position is hybrid (some remote, some in-person time) and is based in our Denver office at 1127 Sherman St. Denver, CO 80203. Summary of Responsibilities Under supervision from the Public Information Officer, the Communications Associate will support the State Land Board’s communications and outreach efforts, with a focus on storytelling and digital content. Content Development Support major updates to the SLB website, including improvements to content, organization, design, and structure. Research, draft, and edit written content for the agency’s blog and other platforms to support website goals Translate complex topics into clear, engaging web content for a broad audience Digital Storytelling Develop, script, and produce a series of informational videos highlighting each of the agency’s lines of business Support development of other digital and multimedia storytelling content, including basic graphics and short-form video General Support Assist with other communications and outreach projects as assigned Support outreach efforts, events, and media tracking as needed Desired Characteristics and Attributes The winning candidate should have an interest in strategic communication, natural resource management, or public lands policy. The candidate should demonstrate an enthusiastic interest in supporting our agency’s mission as well as the following characteristics and attributes: Excellent writing skills Experience or interest in generating multi-faceted content or conducting fieldwork/data analysis Strong organizational skills Team player, yet also an independent worker Great work ethic, disciplined, conscientious, thorough, and diligent Honest, trustworthy, dependable Enthusiastic, energetic, optimistic, positive attitude, a bias for action Minimum Qualifications Three (3) years of experience in an office environment performing communications support functions similar to website management and content writing and editing. - OR - A combination of education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to three (3) years. Related degrees would include studies in business administration, marketing, natural resources management, among others.
