Chief Estimator – Responsibilities and Qualifications The Chief Estimator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the division’s estimating program, providing technical and administrative direction to ensure corporate objectives are met. Responsibilities Manage and administer department functions including operating budgets, staffing, wage reviews, work assignments, performance evaluations, bid results, and archives. Implement and maintain corporate estimating procedures using the corporate computer estimating system and database. Assist Executives, Business Development, and Project Management in determining appropriate project bids and developing strategies. Review all final estimate packages for accuracy and completeness before formal quotation. Review scope/proposal letters for bid and negotiated projects. Participate in presentations to corporate management and clients; may be responsible for closing the "sale". Provide technical assistance in negotiating contracts, change orders, and other requirements. Assist in the preparation of studies, materials, and methods, recommendations, and cost estimates as required. Qualifications Advanced management or technical training preferred. Organizational, supervisory, and decision‑making/problem‑solving skills essential. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.). Familiarity with modern computer estimating systems. Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to changing priorities. Ability to work under time pressure, meet continual deadlines, and maintain a positive attitude. Effective oral and written communication skills for the position. Self‑motivated and capable of working independently and as part of a team. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees, vendors, clients, and others. Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a business‑related field. Minimum 10 years of experience in similar facility construction estimating and related functions, with thorough knowledge of corporate estimating objectives, strategies, and construction contracts. Experience may be a combination of education and technical/field training such as Engineering and estimating experience. General work environment – sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending. Work primarily indoors with varying environmental conditions such as fluorescent lighting and air conditioning. Noise level is usually low to medium; it can be loud on the jobsite.
