Under the direction of a Radiologist, the Ultrasonographer performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations at a technical level that does not require direct supervision. This includes a wide variety of studies such as abdominal, obstetric, gynecologic, venous, small parts, and breast ultrasound. The Ultrasonographer may also assist with minimally invasive procedures and uses independent judgment, technical skill, and acquired knowledge to produce high-quality diagnostic images.

The Ultrasonographer must be registered in two to four certifications through the ARDMS or equivalent.

Education and Certification Requirements:

• Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Sonography program approved by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
• Certified through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or equivalent, holding RVT as well as at least one of the following:
• RDMS (OB or AB)
• RT(S)
• RT(VS)
• RVS
• Must maintain all qualifications per ACR accreditation requirements and relevant continuing education standards (e.g., RT(S)).
• Must be certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) upon hire and maintain clinical competency throughout employment.

Experience Requirements:

· A minimum of two years’ experience working within a Medical Imaging Department doing diagnostic and/or vascular Sonography is preferred.

· Experience working with and caring for all age groups of patients, and complete knowledge of physics, anatomy, medical terminology, sterile technique, and universal safety protection as it relates to Radiology practice is necessary.

Core Competencies:

• Fluent in English for interpreting procedures and communicating effectively with patients and team members.
• Strong interpersonal skills for communication with patients, physicians, nursing staff, and co-workers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1.    Properly identifies and prepares patients for ultrasound procedures.

2.    Acquires optimal diagnostic images using appropriate protocols.

3.    Operates and adjusts ultrasound and PACS equipment efficiently.

4.    Assists Radiologist with:

• Biopsies and aspirations
• Transvaginal and intraoperative procedures
• Special and interventional procedures

1.    Maintains accurate records for each exam, including required documentation and image archiving.

2.    Cleans and maintains ultrasound equipment and exam rooms per infection control guidelines and universal precautions.

3.    Completes all required department and age-specific competencies.

4.    Maintains adequate inventory and notifies leadership of supply needs.

5.    Coordinates and prioritizes workflow between inpatients, outpatients, and emergency needs.

6.    Ensures patient safety, dignity, and privacy at all times.

7.    Maintains compliance with ACR accreditation standards.

8.    Provides instruction and guidance to ultrasound students.

9.    Adheres to all radiation safety protocols, including proper use of protective apparel and monitoring devices.

10. Performs disinfection of ultrasound probes according to manufacturer specifications.

11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
