Position Overview We are looking to hire a dedicated and observant flagger to monitor the flow of traffic around road construction sites. The flagger informs motorists of detour routes, reports disobedient drivers to law enforcement, and answers motorists’ questions. The flagger also directs emergency vehicles safely through construction zones as required. Responsibilities Direct traffic around road construction sites using hand signals and direction signs. Communicate with other flaggers via hand‑held radios to direct two‑way traffic onto a single lane. Inform the construction crew of any traffic issues that may affect their safety. Appropriately position warning and detour signs around construction sites. Set up barricades and traffic cones to cordon off certain areas. Remove all signs, barricades, and traffic cones upon completion of construction work. Assist the construction crew in removing rubble, debris, and hazardous materials. Record the license plate numbers of motorists who neglect to obey traffic signs and directions. Requirements High school diploma or GED. Certification through the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA). Proven experience working as a flagger. Sound knowledge of state traffic regulations. Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to work in harsh weather conditions. Excellent organizational and problem‑solving skills. Exceptional observation and communication skills. Adherence to all applicable traffic laws, rules, and regulations. Reporting any defects, accidents, or violations. Professional and courteous attitude toward co‑workers, supervisors, customers, and the public. Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary. Report to the assigned job site and be ready to begin work at the designated start time. Strict adherence to safety practices and procedures and to company policies. Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required. Required to wear PPE, steel‑toed footwear, safety glasses. Pass a pre‑employment screening and testing program. Physical Demands Vision abilities include color, close, and distance vision, as well as peripheral, depth, and focus perception. Ability to work at heights, climb and balance on ladders, scaffolds, and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways. Requires walking, standing, sitting, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and lifting. Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a work shift of at least eight hours per day, on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions. Frequent hand use to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Must be able to carry, lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs without assistance. Ability to operate equipment under extreme temperatures for extended hours. Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on project needs and demands. Work Environment The position is performed outdoors on a job site in extreme weather conditions for extended hours. Employees are exposed periodically to high levels of noise, dirt, grease, and dust typical of construction projects. The role involves working with or near heavy equipment and moving machinery, and may involve substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt, and concrete. Workers regularly work near moving mechanical parts, on uneven surfaces, and in varying weather conditions, including exposure to vibration, wet or humid environments, and extreme heat or cold.
