Join TKDA as a Professional Engineer - Traffic and help improve the safety and mobility of transportation systems throughout Minnesota and across the country. You'll work alongside a group of engineers, designers, and technicians who have established a reputation for delivering safe and efficient solutions on complex transportation projects for state, county, and local agencies and design-build contractors. Our traffic engineers specialize in traffic operations, transportation safety, traffic studies, and transportation system design that improves mobility and safety for all users.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to both traffic operations and traffic design. Whether your background is in traffic analysis, safety evaluation, and modeling or traffic design and plan development, you'll work as part of a team delivering comprehensive traffic engineering solutions. Successful candidates may bring experience primarily in one area while expanding their expertise across a broader range of traffic engineering services.

For this opportunity, we are seeking a qualified candidate who currently resides or plans to relocate within a regular commuting distance of our office.

Responsibilities

• Lead traffic engineering tasks related to design and plan development, including signing, pavement markings, construction staging and temporary traffic control, traffic signals, and roadway lighting.
• Perform or support traffic operations analyses, safety evaluations, traffic studies, forecasting, and traffic simulation modeling.
• Prepare or oversee plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical memoranda, and reports.
• Support client coordination, project delivery, and technical leadership of project teams.

Required Qualifications

• Lead traffic engineering tasks related to design and plan development, including signing, pavement markings, construction staging and temporary traffic control, traffic signals, and roadway lighting.
• Perform or support traffic operations analyses, safety evaluations, traffic studies, forecasting, and traffic simulation modeling.
• Prepare or oversee plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical memoranda, and reports.
• Support client coordination, project delivery, and technical leadership of project teams.
• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
• Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota or ability to obtain registration within six months of employment.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in traffic engineering with an emphasis in traffic design, traffic operations, or a combination of both.
• Experience with one or both of the following areas:
  • Traffic Design: Experience developing plans and specifications for signing, pavement markings, construction staging and temporary traffic control, traffic signals, and/or roadway lighting. Proficiency with design software such as Bentley OpenRoads Designer or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Traffic Operations: Experience with traffic data collection, traffic forecasting, operations analysis, safety evaluations, traffic studies, and/or simulation modeling. Proficiency with tools such as Synchro/SimTraffic, Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Vissim, Rodel, SIDRA, or similar analysis software.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to write technical reports and specifications, participate in client meetings, and effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams.
• Experience supporting project management, proposal development, or client coordination.
• Interest in developing business development and project management responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

We recognize that engineers at this stage of their careers often bring stronger experience in either traffic design or traffic operations. Experience in one area, together with an interest in broadening your capabilities, is valued.

• Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification, Road Safety Professional (RSP) certification, or interest in attaining either credential.
• Experience in both traffic operations and traffic design.
• Experience developing or delivering corridor studies, including alternatives analysis and development of transportation recommendations.
• Experience with multimodal analysis and design.
• Experience leading project tasks, coordinating technical staff, or mentoring junior engineers.
• Experience supporting project management, proposal development, or client coordination.

The listed salary range reflects only the starting base pay range for candidates with 5-15 years of related experience in our Bloomington, Minnesota office. Compensation is determined based on technical skills, experience level, and qualifications. Candidates with more experience or different compensation expectations are encouraged to apply. All candidates are evaluated on the full scope of what they bring to the role. 

The base compensation range for this position out of our Duluth, MN would be $91,000 - $126,000.
