Position: Veterinary Technician Assistant

Reports To: Veterinary Technicians, Veterinarians & Hospital Management

Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Veterinary Technician Assistant to join our veterinary team. This position supports our veterinary technicians and doctors in providing high-quality, efficient, and compassionate care to our patients.

The Veterinary Technician Assistant is an excellent role for someone who has some experience in veterinary medicine and is comfortable with animal handling and basic clinical responsibilities but may not yet have the experience, technical proficiency or licensing required of a Veterinary Technician.

The ideal candidate is eager to learn, works well in a fast-paced environment, communicates effectively with both clients and team members, and is willing to assist wherever needed to keep patient care and hospital operations running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely restrain dogs and cats for examinations, treatments, blood draws, vaccinations, and other procedures.
• Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, treatments, and procedures.
• Obtain and document basic patient histories and information as directed by the medical team.
• Obtain patient weights and basic vital signs, including temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate, as trained and permitted.
• Prepare examination and treatment areas before and after appointments.
• Set up supplies and equipment needed for treatments and procedures.
• Assist with collecting and preparing laboratory samples under appropriate supervision.
• Assist with radiographs and diagnostic procedures as trained and permitted.
• Prepare patients and treatment areas for surgical and dental procedures.
• Clean, sterilize, organize, and maintain surgical instruments and medical equipment.
• Monitor hospitalized and recovering patients and promptly communicate concerns or changes to the veterinary technician or veterinarian.
• Walk, feed, clean, and provide general comfort and care for hospitalized or boarding patients.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation throughout treatment areas, exam rooms, kennels, surgical areas, and other clinical spaces.
• Properly clean and disinfect kennels, cages, tables, equipment, and medical areas between patients.
• Restock treatment areas, exam rooms, and medical supplies as needed.
• Assist with maintaining accurate medical records and entering appropriate information into the hospital's practice-management system.
• Assist with preparing treatment plans and estimates for recommended diagnostics, procedures, surgeries, and other medical services.
• Help maintain an organized and efficient patient flow throughout the hospital.
• Communicate clearly with veterinarians, technicians, receptionists, assistants, and management regarding patient needs and hospital workflow.
• Provide compassionate and respectful care to every patient while maintaining professional and empathetic communication with clients.
• Perform other patient-care and hospital-support duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Previous veterinary hospital, animal-care, or clinical experience preferred.
• Comfortable handling dogs and cats of different sizes, breeds, temperaments, and medical conditions.
• Basic understanding of veterinary terminology and common veterinary procedures preferred.
• Ability and willingness to learn new clinical skills and follow established medical protocols.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain professionalism in a busy hospital environment.
• Ability to remain calm and compassionate during stressful or emotionally difficult situations.
• Comfortable working around blood, bodily fluids, medical procedures, and hospitalized or critically ill animals.
• Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting. Team members must be able to safely assist with lifting and restraining animals and perform the physical responsibilities associated with working in a veterinary hospital.
