POOL LIFEGUARD & SWIM INSTRUCTOR (RECREATION LEADER SPECIALIST VII-N/C)

Overview The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine oversees a range of parks, community centers, pools, beaches and marinas, offering free and fee-based recreational programs for a diverse community. Aquatic programs include year‑round pools such as Belmont, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, and Silverado. Responsibilities Monitors the aquatics facility and guests, ensuring compliance with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Provides customer service and information to guests; assists disabled guests with lift chairs; reports and resolves complaints, special requests, safety conditions, security issues and illegal activities within scope of authority. Instructs a variety of swimming and water aerobics classes. Cleans and maintains the pool area as needed. Attends all mandatory staff meetings, in‑service and training sessions. Ensures the health, safety and well‑being of all participants in your care at all times. Maintains a daily log and prepares incident, accident and operational reports. Adheres to the department dress code by maintaining a neat and clean personal appearance. Implements the department and site administrative and record‑keeping policies and procedures. Performs all other assigned duties as requested by the lead staff and/or supervisor. Minimum Qualifications Must possess or obtain the following two (2) certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard – must be obtained within 6 months of hiring. Water Safety Instructor – must be obtained within 6 months of hiring. Must be able to pass a swim test (200 yard swim in freestyle/breaststroke, 75 yard stroke demonstration, brick retrieval, and treading water). Must be at least 16 years of age (if under 18, must have a valid permit to work). Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work. Desirable Qualifications Experience in aquatics, recreation, and/or other related areas. Successful Candidate Profile Willing to work a flexible schedule and assist various programs at different pool locations. Good interpersonal skills with children, parents and staff (school and agency). Adaptability to a changing environment. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment. Experience working with children and youth from a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socio‑economic backgrounds.
