Our client, an A-rated Insurance Carrier, is seeking to add a Workers’ Compensation Claims Unit Manager to their California team. This individual will oversee a team of adjusters handling California Workers’ Compensation claims, ensuring compliance with state regulations, company guidelines, and industry best practices. The Unit Manager will provide technical direction, quality assurance, and performance management while maintaining strong service standards and operational efficiency. This position may be fully remote within California, with occasional travel for training or leadership meetings. Key Responsibilities Supervise, mentor, and manage a team of California Workers’ Compensation Claims Adjusters handling indemnity claims. Ensure compliance with California Workers’ Compensation laws, including Labor Code requirements, DWC regulations, and Fair Claims Settlement Practices. Conduct regular file reviews and audits to ensure timely investigations, proper compensability determinations, accurate reserving, and appropriate benefit administration. Provide technical guidance on complex indemnity claims, litigated files, permanent disability exposure, and settlement strategies including Stipulations and Compromise & Release agreements. Approve reserves and settlements within designated authority and provide recommendations on high-exposure claims. Monitor diary management, litigation strategy, vendor performance, and overall claim lifecycle handling. Serve as an escalation point for injured worker concerns, employer issues, attorney disputes, and complaint resolution. Collaborate with Defense Counsel, Medical Providers, Nurse Case Managers, Utilization Review, and internal stakeholders to ensure effective and timely claim resolution. Track and analyze claim trends, severity drivers, and performance metrics to improve claim outcomes and reduce overall loss costs. Support training initiatives and ongoing professional development for team members. Promote a culture of compliance, accountability, customer service, and claims integrity. Requirements 5 - 10+ years of California Workers’ Compensation claims experience, including indemnity and litigated claims. Minimum 2+ years of supervisory or team lead experience within a Workers’ Compensation claims environment. Strong working knowledge of California Labor Code, DWC regulations, disability rating processes, and settlement procedures. Demonstrated experience managing complex and high-exposure Workers’ Compensation claims. Prior experience working directly for an Insurance Carrier or Third-Party Administrator (TPA) required. Strong reserving, negotiation, litigation management, and analytical skills. Proficiency in claims management systems. Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Industry designations such as AIC, ARM, CPCU, or WCCA are a plus.
