Senior Staff AccountantCheshire, CT - HybridPosition OverviewThe Senior Staff Accountant prepares balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports. Responsibilities also include analyzing trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses. They may offer suggestions about resource utilization, tax strategies, and assumptions underlying budget forecasts. The Senior Staff Accountant has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the insurance industry and relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals connecting business partners to financial concepts and regulations. The Senior Staff Accountant continually educates themselves about the enterprise and diverse internal businesses. They are considered a subject matter expert and may be expected to coach/mentor junior staff and provide leadership and oversight while taking the lead in the enterprise closing process.Essential FunctionsMake monthly accounting entries; supports accountant team and review staff's work to ensure completeness.Complete statutory/non-profit filings and keep current with financial and legal requirements.Perform specialized functions including investment accounting, membership accounting (dividends and investment in subsidiaries), and taxes (federal and state).Own the monthly financial statements and variance reports; providing leadership with overviews upon request of senior financial leaders and enterprise business partners (e.g., financial flash reports, supplemental summary financial reports).Meets reporting deadlines with accuracy through effective time managementLearns and utilizes accounting and audit management best practicesJob RequirementsBachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related degree required5+ years of accounting experience requiredExperience within property-casualty insurance and statutory accounting, strongly preferred.Strong experience with financial databases and excelMust be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.Must be able to be on-site for two weeks for training upon hire in our Cheshire, CT officeKnowledge, Skills, AbilitiesAdvanced knowledge of GAAP/STAT and other regulatory requirementsStrong written and verbal communication skillsStrong analytical problem-solving skillsStrong time management skills with the ability to adapt and prioritizeStrong customer service skillsAbility to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholdersWork Environment and Physical DemandsInside climate-controlled office buildingProlonged sitting and using a PC <10% TravelAbility to lift 25lbsPlease note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
