Clinical Research Assistant

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the laboratory director, Dr. Carskadon, and the daily direct supervision of the project coordinator, the Sleep Research Assistant (SRA) performs duties including form preparation, recruitment, participant and family interaction, and other tasks necessary for research projects. The role includes direct contact with participants, such as preparing them for overnight studies and interacting with them during in‑lab sessions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend study planning meetings. Prepare and maintain lab equipment for in‑lab studies (organize protocols, forms, supplies, performance batteries, etc.). Apply polysomnographic equipment (EOG, EEG, EKG, EMG) according to research protocols. Perform physiological calibrations and make timely adjustments. Monitor electrophysiological recordings, ensuring participant safety and data integrity, identifying and correcting artifacts, documenting sleep stages, body position, and other observations for interpretation. Download and archive polysomnographic data following recording. Participate in data entry and error checking. Score sleep/wake stages and physiological events using Rechtschaffen and Kales standards. Demonstrate strong people skills, enthusiasm, organization, creativity, determination, and time management. Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of participant information. Work flexible and extended hours, including early morning, late night, weekends, and travel to participants’ homes as needed. Assist other research teams when projects require additional attention and conduct orientation sessions or laboratory tours for participants and families.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in a life science field. Experience recruiting and working with human volunteers. Experience with physiological recordings (EKG, EEG, etc.) is a plus. Familiarity with data/file management, computer data management programs, and Macintosh computers is a plus. Can perform independent work within department policies and refer complex problems to a supervisor. Will assist in training and supervise research students and summer apprentices during in‑lab data collection.
