Medical Management Specialist

Overview The Medical Management Specialist is a position located in the Office of the Chief, Health Administration Service/Business Office (HAS) at the VA Medical Center in Central Western Massachusetts. The role represents both the Medical Center Director and the Chief of HAS on all administrative matters occurring when assigned to duties other than a normal tour of duty. Promotion Potential The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Time-In-Grade Requirement For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 showing your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year and does not clearly demonstrate the required one-year time-in-grade, you must provide an additional SF-50 that does. Qualifications – GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05. Examples include knowledge of medical organizations and programs, Microsoft Office proficiency, interpretive skills for rules and regulations, problem‑analysis capabilities, and use of analytical tools. OR Education: One (1) full year of graduate‑level education or superior academic achievement (transcripts required). OR Combination: A combination of specialized experience and education that together satisfy the level. Qualifications – GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07. Examples include advanced analytical ability, judgment, discretion, knowledge of administrative principles, supervision techniques, medical record systems, Microsoft Office, and analytical tools. OR Education: Master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or two full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to such a degree. Combination: A combination of specialized experience and education exceeding the first year of graduate‑level education. Experience Experience includes paid and unpaid work, such as volunteer service through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps). Credit will be granted for all qualifying experience, including volunteer work. Note on Hours A full year of work is considered 35‑40 hours per week. Part‑time experience is credited on the basis of actual time spent. Applicants seeking credit for such experience must clearly indicate duties, responsibilities, and weekly hours for each position. Physical Requirements The role requires significant movement throughout the Healthcare System with occasional lifting of objects such as suitcases, clothing, or medical charts. Work is performed in a lighted, climate‑controlled office that may be busy and congested. Occasional travel may be required, and frequent visits to various sections and buildings, including clinics, wards, laboratories, and the morgue, are expected.
