Clinical Research Scientist – Mental Health AI What if you could help define how the world evaluates AI in mental health? We’re looking for a Clinical Research Scientist to help build a new research program focused on evaluating AI systems in mental health and other clinically sensitive settings. As people increasingly turn to AI for emotional support, health information, and guidance during moments of distress, there is a growing need for rigorous, clinically grounded evaluation. You’ll help determine what safe, appropriate, and clinically responsible AI behavior looks like. This is an opportunity to have significant ownership, work alongside leading AI and psychology researchers, publish research, and help shape the future of mental health AI. What You’ll Do Lead the clinical design of AI evaluations across mental health and other sensitive domains Identify clinically meaningful failure modes, including missed distress signals, harmful reinforcement, diagnostic overreach, and unhealthy emotional dependence Develop realistic multi-turn scenarios, benchmarks, and scoring frameworks Design validation studies involving clinician review, inter-rater reliability, and real-world interaction data Collaborate with psychologists, psychiatrists, researchers, and academic institutions Partner with AI researchers and engineers to implement evaluations at scale Analyze model behavior and publish research findings Help define the broader research agenda and establish new directions in mental health AI evaluation We’re especially interested in candidates with a: PhD, MD, or equivalent advanced degree in Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry, Public Health, or a closely related field Strong track record of peer-reviewed research and publication Experience designing and managing clinical or academic research studies Background in psychology, psychiatry, pediatrics, public health, or related clinical research Established relationships with clinicians, researchers, academic institutions, or other collaborators Ability to translate complex clinical concepts into rigorous research methodologies Interest in AI, LLMs, and emerging technology  — technical expertise is helpful but not required Why This Role Stands Out Define how AI systems are evaluated for mental health applications Work directly with AI and psychology researchers Collaborate with leading AI labs and academic institutions Publish research on frontier topics in digital mental health Set research agendas and pursue multi-year initiatives Help influence the broader conversation around AI safety and child/mental health Base: $140K–$185K Equity: Competitive Work Model: Primarily on‑site / 5 days per week Visa: Open to visa transfers, including OPT and H-1B transfers Additional benefits include: Relocation & transportation support 401(k) Lunch & dinner provided Snacks, coffee & drinks Unlimited PTO About the Team The company has roots in Stanford NLP research and is building technology at the intersection of AI and mental health.
