Library Clerk

The Sierra Madre Public Library is seeking a part-time Library Clerk to join the team. Under the direction of the Reference Librarian this person shelves and retrieves Library materials; assists patrons of all ages with basic library questions and computer use; regularly assists in the circulation of materials; informs patrons of acceptable library use and behavior; and performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of duties include staffing the circulation service desk, collecting, sorting and filing library materials, repairing library materials, checking in daily book drop, retrieving and returning material from non-public areas upon request, demonstrating continuous effort to decrease turnaround times, streamlining work processes and working cooperatively with library staff, assisting with book and informational displays, keeping the library in good order, moving furniture, equipment and supplies as assigned to set-up facilities and meeting rooms, assisting group using facilities and providing assistance at special events, assisting with processing new materials, and performing other duties as assigned.

Typical qualifications include knowledge of alphabetical and decimal numeric filing system, basic computer use, purpose and functions of the library, effective public relations, general principles of risk management, techniques for providing a high level of customer service, safe work practices, ability to communicate with individuals or groups utilizing a broad base of verbal skills, comprehend, interpret and provide instruction in the use of a variety of technological tools, apply common sense understanding to perform semi-repetitive tasks, apply library sorting and organizational standards, utilize basic functions of the library automated system, comprehend and make inferences from written material, work cooperatively with staff and the general public, read and follow technical directions while working with computers and other like devices, instruct patrons on the use of library equipment and tools, use independent judgment in non-routine situations, move objects, carry and unload boxes of books and other library material in excess of 20 pounds, perform special projects as needed and receive direction from library staff, and work a flexible schedule which includes evenings and weekends.

Education/training/experience: Six (6) months of experience working or volunteering in a public library setting. Previous computer experience is desirable. A current American Red Cross certificate in First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community is preferred but not required.

Physical and mental demands include mobility to work in a standard public library setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach, as well as push and pull up to 20 pounds with heavy book carts and drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Repetitive hand, arm and body movements are required in this position as well as bending, reaching and lifting library material during the course of the work shift. Positions in this classification occasionally lift and carry library materials that typically weigh less than 20 pounds. While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use oral communication skills; read and file material alphabetically or numerically; work with constant interruptions; and interact with employees, management, and others encountered in the course of work; occasionally subject to conflicts involving use of library services. The employee primarily works in a public library setting but may be required to travel to different city facilities and events. In the library setting, the noise level is frequently quiet or moderately quiet. Occasional driving is required to visit city facilities and assist with preparations for community and public meetings.
