Video and motion are central to how we tell those stories. This role owns that craft end to end for clients ranging from international strategics to startup disruptors across MedTech, Biotech, and Healthcare—and holds every piece to a true filmmaking standard in one of the most demanding, high-stakes sectors there is.

We're looking for a Director of Video Production to own the entire video and motion practice at Recreation, end to end. This is a hands-on leadership role, not a desk job. You are as comfortable behind a camera on set as you are grading footage in the studio. Not only are you comfortable, you love the process! You know pre-production, production, and post-production cold. You run the studio's technical operation — camera kits, media management, storage, and backup — and you're the final line of quality control on everything creative that ships.

You’ll work directly with the founder/director and the wider creative and strategy team, and you'll help shape how we scale the video practice as we grow.

What You’ll Own Pre-Production

You lead projects from creative brief to the first day of the shoot, with the help of a producer.

• Break down scripts and creative briefs into shootable plans — shot lists, storyboards, and shooting schedules.
• Scout and secure locations, including clinical, OR, cadaver-lab, and controlled hospital environments, and manage the access, consent, and compliance realities that come with them.
• Build and manage production budgets and timelines; source and negotiate with crew, talent, gear‑rental houses, and vendors.
• Cast and direct on‑camera talent, KOLs, surgeons, and clinicians — knowing how to get a natural, credible performance out of a non‑actor is essential in our world.
• Own call sheets, releases, insurance/COI coordination, and all the logistics that make a shoot day run.
• Spec the technical approach for each job: camera package, lensing, lighting, audio, and data workflow.
  

Production

You're the person on set who makes the day.

• Direct and/or shoot as the situation demands — you can run the show as director and step onto the camera when the job calls for it.
• Operate and supervise our camera systems (see technical section below), pulling the best possible image while keeping the shoot on schedule.
• Lead the crew — DPs, gaffers, grips, sound, ACs, PAs — with the calm authority that keeps a set moving and people wanting to work with you again. On leaner shoots, expect to wear many of those hats yourself, moving fluidly between roles as the day demands.
• Own on‑set data management (DIT): offloads, checksummed transfers, redundant copies, and a clean, labeled media pipeline before a single card is wiped.
• Make the real‑time calls on lighting, framing, coverage, and audio that determine whether post has something great to work with.
  

Post-Production

You own the edit bay and everything downstream of it.

• Lead editorial from selects and assembly through fine cut, whether cutting yourself or directing an editor.
• Own — or art‑direct — motion graphics, titles, and animation for brand and campaign work.
• Drive color grading and finishing to a broadcast/theatrical standard.
• Manage sound design, mix, music licensing, and delivery specs.
• Deliver to every required format and spec — from social cutdowns to trade‑show loops to broadcast masters — with correct codecs, color spaces, and deliverable packaging.
  

Studio & Technical Management

• Own the our camera ecosystem end to end — bodies, media, power, monitoring, lensing, and support gear. Keep kits maintained, firmware current, calibrated, insured, and shoot‑ready at all times. Track the gear, know what needs servicing, and spec new acquisitions.
• Own media, storage, and backup. Design and enforce the workflow that moves footage from card to NAS with integrity — redundant, checksum‑verified copies, a sane folder and naming taxonomy, LTO or cloud archive for finished projects, and a backup regime that means we never lose a frame. You are personally accountable for the safety of our footage.
• Manage the edit/finishing infrastructure — workstations, shared storage, proxy workflows, and the software stack.
• Build and document repeatable pipelines so the whole team works the same clean way.
  

Quality Control

• Own QC across all video and motion output — technical (codec, color, audio levels, legal/broadcast-safe) and creative (does it meet the Recreation standard).
• Catch problems before a client ever sees them, and hold the whole practice to a consistent, high level of craft.
• In our category, that also means an eye for clinical and regulatory accuracy in how procedures, devices, and claims are depicted.

Technical Environment

Cameras (primary): RED Digital Cinema — V‑RAPTOR / V‑RAPTOR XL, KOMODO / KOMODO‑X, DSMC2 (Monstro / Helium / Gemini) . You know the REDCODE (R3D) RAW workflow inside and out — recording formats, compression ratios, IPP2 color pipeline, and RED media ( RED PRO CFexpress, MINI‑MAG ).

RED software: REDCINE‑X PRO for R3D handling, transcode, and metadata.

Also expected across the broader kit: experience with supporting cinema systems (e.g. ARRI, Sony Venice/FX, Blackmagic URSA ) is a plus; cinema lens systems ( Canon CN‑E, Sigma Cine, Zeiss, Cooke and comparable); professional lighting ( ARRI, Aputure, Nanlite ); and pro audio capture ( Sound Devices, Sennheiser, Rode, DPA , lav and boom).

Editorial & finishing:

• Adobe Creative Cloud — Premiere Pro (editorial), After Effects (motion/comp), Photoshop / Illustrator (design assets), Media Encoder (delivery).
• DaVinci Resolve — editorial and, especially, color grading and finishing .

Collaboration & review: Vimeo for client review, sharing, and versioning.

Media, storage & backup:

• Shared/networked storage — NAS administration on QNAP and Ubiquiti UniFi NAS (our systems), with familiarity across comparable platforms ( Synology and others), RAID concepts, and shared-storage editorial (e.g. LumaForge / OWC Jellyfish –class systems a plus).
• Verified transfer / checksum tools — Hedge, Shotput Pro, Silverstack .
• Archive — LTO and/or cloud cold storage, with a real archival and retrieval discipline.
• MASV or comparable for large-file client delivery.

You don't need every single one of these on day one. You do need to be the kind of person who owns a technical pipeline and makes it bulletproof.

Who You Are

• 5+ years in professional video/film production with real depth across pre‑production, production, and post — ideally including agency, brand, or commercial work.
• A genuine hyphenate : you can direct, you can shoot, and you can edit, and you know which hat to wear when.
• Deep, hands‑on on set and post production experience and a rigorous approach to media management and backup.
• Personable and collaborative — the person clients trust on set and the team wants in the room. Leadership here is earned through craft and calm, not title.
• Organized and accountable — you own budgets, schedules, and the safety of our footage without being asked twice.
• Bonus: experience in healthcare, medical device, pharma, or another regulated/technical category, and comfort in clinical environments (OR, lab, hospital).
