Associate Attorney - Insurance Defense Litigation Associate Attorney - Insurance Defense Litigation (Longshore/DBA/Defense Base Act)

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Associate Attorney to join our insurance defense litigation team with a focus on Longshore, Defense Base Act (DBA), and related defense matters. The successful candidate will manage a litigation caseload from intake through trial, provide strategic defense counseling to insured clients and carriers, draft pleadings and motion practice, conduct discovery and depositions, and work collaboratively with senior counsel to achieve favorable outcomes while meeting firm and client objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a diverse caseload of insurance defense matters, including Longshore and Defense Base Act (DBA) claims, from intake through resolution or trial.
• Conduct legal research and draft pleadings, motions, memoranda, responses, and settlement documents.
• Prepare for and take or defend depositions, coordinate witness preparation, and support trial strategy and execution.
• Handle all aspects of discovery, including drafting and responding to interrogatories, requests for production, and subpoenas; manage e-discovery and review workflows.
• Counsel and communicate with insurance carriers, adjusters, and insured clients regarding case strategy, exposure, and settlement negotiations.
• Appear in state and federal courts and administrative proceedings; prepare for and attend hearings, mediations, and trials as needed.
• Develop and maintain case budgets and billing records; meet firm billing standards and client reporting requirements.
• Collaborate with partners and senior attorneys on case strategy; supervise/paralegal staff and coordinate outside experts and vendors.
• Monitor statutory and regulatory developments affecting Longshore, DBA, and related defense practice areas and apply changes to client matters.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active admission to practice in the relevant state(s).
• 3+ years of litigation experience with a substantial background in insurance defense. Prior experience handling Longshore Act, Defense Base Act (DBA), or similar maritime/longshore matters strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated courtroom experience, including hearings, depositions, and trial preparation; trial experience is a plus.
• Superior legal research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to draft persuasive pleadings and motions.
• Strong client-service orientation with excellent communication and negotiation skills; ability to explain complex legal issues to clients and insurers.
• Experience with e-discovery platforms and legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw or Lexis); proficiency with case management and billing software.
• Ability to manage a high-volume caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to travel as needed for depositions, hearings, and trials; valid drivers license.
