FLC Laboratory for the Humanistic Study of a More-than-Human-World Graphic Designer

Position Summary: The Fort Lewis College Laboratory for the Humanistic Study of a More-than-Human-World is a campus-wide interdisciplinary curricular and research initiative that utilizes humanistic methods to nurture an understanding of relationships between humans, non-humans, and their environments. This initiative, which is funded by the Mellon Foundation, supports the creation of new general education modules, upper-division interdisciplinary courses, undergraduate research opportunities, and professional development opportunities to strengthen humanistic inquiry across disciplines. It culminates in the creation of an open-access digital resource documenting pedagogical models, student work, and curricular innovations that can be adapted at FLC and elsewhere.

The Graphic Designer will create a cohesive visual identity for the project to be used across initiatives. Initial responsibilities will focus on the development and delivery of a brand identity system, including a logo, color palette, typography, illustrative asset library, and promotional templates. Following completion of these initial deliverables, the Graphic Designer may provide additional design services in support of Laboratory programming, communications, and grant activities as needs arise during the term of the appointment.

The Graphic Designer will be supervised by the Programming Development Coordinator and will work collaboratively with the grant team throughout the design and review process. The successful candidate will bring a distinctive voice to their design work, strong design skills and attention to detail, and an interest in translating the Laboratory's interdisciplinary mission into an accessible and adaptable visual identity.

Job Description:

Responsibilities and Deliverables:

Research & Conceptual Development: 10%

• Research Fort Lewis College's institutional history, and any cultural and environmental contexts relevant to the initiative.

• Consultation with grant team; presentation of research and visual concepts.

Logo Development & Refinement: 30%

• Development of a primary logo/wordmark and appropriate variations for print, digital, and social media use.

• Consultation with grant team on design revisions.

Color Palette & Typography: 15%

• Selection of a color palette in coordination with the grant team, considering the brand identity and FLC’s practical production needs. Provide HEX, RGB, CMYK, and Pantone codes for all colors.

• Selection of typography for general communication uses.

Illustrative Asset Library: 15%

• Creation and delivery of an illustrative asset library, including editable Adobe Illustrator source files.

Promotional Templates: 25%

• Creation and delivery of editable promotional templates (such as flyers for event announcements) in Adobe Illustrator or another format readily editable by the grant team.

Other Duties as Assigned 5%

• Provide additional design support for Laboratory programming, communications, and grant activities as needed and funding allows.

Required Education, Specialized Skills, and Experience:

• BA or MA in Graphic Design, Art, Art History, or related field.

• Two or more years of experience in branding, marketing, and graphic design.

• Strong command of design fundamentals, including typography, imagery, and composition, with excellent attention to detail.

• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as working with diverse communities.

• Evidence of excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

• Ability and desire to contribute to the goals of the Humanities for All Times grant program.

• Knowledge of accessibility principles and best practices in visual design, including readability, color contrast, and accessible digital materials.

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:

• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, vector, and raster files.

• Ability to foster a collaborative and positive working environment.

Reports To / Supervisory Responsibility:

The Graphic Designer reports to the project’s Programming Development Coordinator and has no supervisory responsibilities.

• Typical work hours: Up to 20 hours per week, with a flexible schedule established in coordination with the supervisor. Availability during regular business hours may be required for meetings and collaboration.

Compensation

The hourly rate is $27.74/hr
